best thing to do is do LOTS of tutorials
just to learn the basic layout of photoshop

also doin mini projects, like make a banner for a site (imaginary or otherwise)

go to http://www.tutorialforums.com/ for some really good tutes and help (dont have to sign up to view the forums tho)
