Default win2k recovery

New to win2k, advice please.

Whever win98se crashed with blue screen unrecoverable etc. I would boot to dos and backup my important files then Ghost(norto) my operating back to active partition all within 15mins.

Now I use win 2k and have manage to crash it totally at least 6 times. The thing boots up blue screens then reboots. I can easily format the partition and ghost back the operating system but I dont know how to back up my stuff when win2k fails to boot.
How do I back up the NTFS partition quickly and easily in this setting.

I have used ntfs-dos program, bit fiddly though

no immediate fix I know of .. sorry

However.
Have you cosidered installing 2k with a FAT32 file system.
that way your old file utils ought to work.
I read somewhwer on the net that NTFS kinda sucks from a speed point of view.
so if you don't need all the security add ons this is a good choice

You can try the Last Known Config option when you press F8 on first win2k start up screen which will revert your settings back to the last time you successfully booted windows. Just remember to press the L key as it says, some people forget this! Also Safe mode could be an option, hopefully will allow you to atleast save your important files and get into a very basic windows.

You can also try the win2k repair process. Basically you need to run win2k set up and if you've been a good boy and kept a ERD you use this, otherwise you take a ticket in the lotto and let win2k setup try and restore automatically for you.

You can simply use Ghost (even if W2k is running on an NTFS partition) to 'back up' your entire W2k install and all your programs. This is the easiest and best option.

You can also try the 'recovery process' that rager mentioned.

And as a last resort do a new install of W2k. But install over the top of your old version and the majority of the time it will fix any problems you had - but also keep all the original settings and programs you had installed.

unfortunately the repair process rarely works for me (ive had 3 complete deaths).

i had to reinstall over the top as was mentioned by wolfy to backup my stuff

u don't have an internal zip do ya ? thats what was killing my win2k..........HD powered off at shutdown too early due to zip, registry corruptions the result.

yeah the recovery process doesnt work for me either. There have been a number of program installations that have caused the crashes.

I dont have enough hard drive space to dump the whole partition to. My current solution is to have dual boot and use win98-NTFSto dos , although I would prefer not to have to dual boot just for this.

harpie, the W2k 'Recovery Console' ([i]A DOS-like command prompt) will let you read/write to all your harddrives, including those formatted with NTFS. Maybe this will help?

You can invoke it from the install process or actually install it onto your machine and then it will be an additional option you can choose on the operating system choice menu as you machine boots. Install it onto your machine by running the 'setup program' again with an additional switch: winnt32.exe /cmdcons

perhaps the most useful post on the New Improved (TM) forums! Thanks Wolfy - will definitely be GHOSTing when I set up my RAID array!
