Thinking back, it would be TFC just before CS was released. So my online experience isn't all that long... Was tempted to fire up TFC the other day at a LAN but everyone said no...

Used to play C&C, Doom and Duke3D 1on1 using a direct dial modem connection, but the first game I played fully online was Quakeworld/Team Fortress.

Red Alert would be my first genuine online experience

things were pretty quiet until i got ADSL and played a lot of DoD until 1.0 came out and i was so disgusted by it that i defected to CS which i was hooked on until 1.6/Steam came out and i was so utterly disgusted that i stopped playing except for the occasional game on a 1.5 server

i just reinstalled steam yesterday in the hope i can get some enjoyment out of those once beloved games

Probably first game I played online was CS... didn't last too long though because I found my Diablo1 CD in a drawer and that took up most of my time on the net to begin with. I was on a 33.6k modem with trumpnet. :S

Started off playings muds, then progressed to playing Doom 2 1vs 1 via modem.

First big online experience would have been UT. Loved playing Capture the Flag.... Dont know what server i played on, although i remember it had a ping of about 200 which was good for my 56k modem

Ahh the memorys. I really must get back into playing UT and capture the flag..... better go out and buy ut2k4.

Damn you all for bringing back memories causing me to spend money....

Diablo.

My first impression was that half the people you meet in online games are very rude. And there were cheats everywhere.

My first was :

Total Annihilation at BoneYards Of Course!! (1997 or 1998)

Id be playing right now if they didnt shut it. Talk about ahead of its time. A persistant , ongoing battlefield, with all the stats you could want. I loved it. Many have tried, but not even approached its brilliance.

cheers

edit: I thought you mainly meant proper graphical games as such. I was playing text MUDS at ANU in 1992.
