Don't be scared pushing the RAM in too hard, that's just the way it fits so that it doesn't fall out.

Laptop ram is really easy to install, just remember the ram slots are angled, you slot it in diagonally then push it down

To install RAM into most laptops, then yes, unscrew base, slot in new stuff... BUT, if you have a Toshiba, then it's under the keyboard. Just as easy, but different place....

On this sort of note, how picky/compatible are laptops when it comes to RAM on recent laptops? Is it a fairly generic component, like on desktops?

you will find that some laptops are extremely picky about the ram you shove in there. New ones are not too bad, but ones that use SDRAM are pretty picky. You'll find that they'll work, but have a tendency to crash a fair bit.

Just for the record, my asus was easy .. backplate.

Mixing the stock standard samsung ram (it appears) with the kingston I put in hasnt been an issue, which is great.
