Unhappy Win2k Service pack2

Is anyone else having problems with the Win2000 service pack 2?

I don’t know if it has to do with the fact this I use a voodoo and maybe there is some kind of compatibility issue because 3Dfx’s drivers are older then SPK2, but I get nothing but exe errors in many of my programs. The reason I suspect my Voodoo drivers is because after I installed spk 2, my 3Dfx tools were completely gone. I tried reinstalling windows, but this time I applied the spk right away after installing the chipset drivers for the 815EP, and finally the 3Dfx drivers, and that problem went away, but the system still crashes.

Anyway, I don’t know what the deal is, SPK2 is suppose to be a “quality only” service pack. I just want to know if any one else is having this problem?

Thanks

Ya the GFDDR drivers were probably written after spk2, right?
I really think that my Voodoo drivers might not be compatible. By the way, do you notice any performance increase with spk2? I didn’t have it on long enough to test it, but I'm wondering? my system went to hell after I installed it though.

I emailed Microsoft, and as you can guess, they didn’t get back to me, although they will help me as long as I pay $200+ dollars "Per incident", I mean thats what the lady on the phone said it would cost me

I agree Poddy

Now that I’m running only Spk1 again, I haven’t had one crash, not one twitch.

I really don’t know what MS thinks they are doing. That’s one thing I can’t stand about most manufactures, is when they finally come out with something great, and instead of working to make it superior, they come out with something completely new and full of bugs. I haven’t even looked at the new windowsNT

Don't go blaming Microsoft. They write the service packs to do specific things - if you don't need those things done, then don't install the Service Pack. Microsoft themselves give that advice - Service Packs, and Hot Fixes, are only supposed to be installed when there is a problem that exists which the SP or HF explicitely fixes.

There are simply too many configurations for ANY software company to make allowances for them all. Different configs will react in different ways. If you're not running a "standard" system (with all your hardware being included on the HCL), then don't expect a "standard" reaction from your system when you install something.

Manaz, I totally agree with you. Microsoft definitely makes an excellent product, as a mater of fact, They make some of the best!
I'm also aware that not all spk's are for everyone so I'm not upset about that, and I personally don't believe it is Microsoft’s fault at all!

If you read my second post above, you will notice that is says Quote: “I really think that my Voodoo drivers might not be compatible”.

I was simply saying that when people like myself want to talk to them about my personal configuration to help “them” improve on their product, and they come back saying that I need to pull my credit card out and spend 200 dollars, that is absolutely insane. I am a person who is willing to give Microsoft Any personal information in an effort to help myself and them make improvement on their product. $200 per incident? Reality check. How many people are willing to give their time up to help a multi billion dollar cooperation that got built with our money.

Anyway, I do agree with you that MS makes great products! But $200+ dollars for one incident.

That’s off the planet.

sp2 worked fine for me but i too have heard of many problems for other people....so if you dont NEED to install it the best bet for others is not to.

I don’t understand that, MS tells people they should only install service packs when they need them, but yet they will sell intergraded disks. I have spk one intergraded, which inset a problem, but I would have never bought one with the spk2

Is that an OEM copy?, If not Return it to them and complain!
They can afford to send you a new one with out the service pack, I’m sure of it.

Don't go blaming Microsoft…? Who should I blame?

I've had no problems with service pack 2. In fact it has fixed a couple of annoying issues i was having with SP1.

Thumbs up from me
