looks good to me... compaq is generally above average when it comes to build quality... so basically I'd be looking out for things like weight/battery life. performance should be good out of that machine, although personally I think Radeon 9000 IGP is somewhat limiting your gaming experience but is easily sufficient... As for upgrading to 2gig of ram, i think it's a little pointless and more tedious as mentioned on the site, you need to remove the exisitng 2x256mb modules in order to get 2g of ram, which would be overkill anyway, especially fora laptop.

A colleague at work has the 3003AP and he is quite impressed by it.

The screen is bright and clear, but the resolution is relatively low for a large widescreen (I'm used to 1920 x 1200).

The weight is quite good. Not too heavy for what is physically quite a large machine.

As for 2GB RAM ... my Inspiron has 2GB. About the only time I use the full 2GB (and yes, I have used ALL of it!!) is when I run multiple virtual machines at the same time.

You see the reason why I asked the 2gig ram question is that I am going to do a bit of 3d rendering to show clients and my boss etc etc the work we do..... and the program we use is ram hungry It needs min 2gig on normal pc's ...

The hardrive is 60gig which is perfect but I dont know the speed of it could be 4200 hey ? thats pretty shit i recon

and what type of CPU does it have? is it a HT version?

Sounds like what you want.

It could cost you about 1000 bucks AUD for 2 x 1gig so dimms.

If the screen is important, best to check it out in person before buying I reckon.

It's possible the Toshiba has a better screen, which could be why it costs alot more?

We have a lot of HP and Compaq laptops at work and i find we have a lot of problems with them.

Out of 10 laptops, all of them have been in for service at least once.

4 or so have had their cdroms replaced, 3 or so have had motherboards replaced.

Could just be us, but imo thats not very good

Where I use to work we had over 100 HP/Compaq laptops at work, we had bad batches or RAM, and Mainboards, had a run on CDROM/Burners too at one stage.

Very up and down with laptops, but when they worked, they were quite quick and powerful for a laptop.

For $2200 seems like a steal!

My previous laptop was a presario and the quality of it left much to be desired.

I dropped it a short distance, on carpet and the LCD is fux0r3d. Now im not saying that it wasnt my fault for dropping it, but for $3500 i think it should have survived that.

Besides that though, the hinges ended up wearing out to the point where it wouldn't hold up anymore, the PCMCIA button broke off and the outer casing cracked from simply opening and closing it.

I had it about 18 months and this is what you get? Not really good quality i think for the outlay.

I now have a Acer and it's soooo much better.
