I bought some in 1999 and drank it on 1999-2000 NYE. It was OK. Not as nice as a Gulden Draak or Chimay Bleu but I guess it was designed to age.
I think the value is based on rarity rather than flavour. I also tried the 2001 (or was it 2002?) vintage last year. It cost all of $15. Not too bad a beer, but not brilliant. I have honestly tried better homebrew (not my own, yet tho )

Nice rich raisiny flavour.. not too bad really... i think i bought it for $10.... sif go on Ebay and buy something that's already been aging way in bottleshops/wholesalers for years.... good alternative to the Grand Ridge Supershine... www.grand-ridge.com.au |

I bought both the 1999 and 2000 vintage. Both were aged for about 18 months before drinking. I thought the 1999 was much better than the 2000 vintage.
Personally, I would sell the bottle for a grand. It doesn't taste that good.

I dont get why people would sell it for a grand. I bought a bottle of it for $10 mid 2003. The bottleshop had cellared several cartons worth of it in their wine cellar, so the temperature control was perfect.
To be honest, I thought it was a very average strong ale. Heres my rating on it: Rated: 3.2 out of 5 AR6/10 AP4/5 FL5/10 PA4/5 OV13/20 Pours deep deep amber-brown, with a fine creamy beige head. Caramel and hop aromas, with a similar taste. Strong smokey and bitter aftertaste. Smooth and full mouthfeel. I should note back then my rating techniques werent very refined though . Even so, I cannot fathom someone paying $1000 for it. I havent even heard of Thomas Hardys Ale going for that much, and its one of the most well known beers made for aging around. You can pick up properly aged 20+ year old strong ales at cafes in Belgium for under 50 euros too.edit - I just checked my bottle and it looks *identical* to yours. On the left of the label it says "Vintage 1999" above the 750ml bit.
