Default PDA and (European) Hotspots

I've been reading suggestions to use wi-fi capable PDAs to 'check emails' etc whilst travelling by picking up public 'hotspots'.

I think it's an excellent idea. Are these facilities free in touristy places? It would be a good investment compared to spending money in internet cafes.

Are they easy to find?

Do people have personal experiences with them? I'm considering places around Europe.

I've found this: http://www.wi-fizone.org/zoneFinder.asp?TID=7

Although I think

1. the hotspots are not free
2. they only support IPAQs (Pocket PCs).

Let me know if I'm wrong!
