My laptop is covered under my house insurance, with GIO, with the extra coverage, that i can take it interstate/out of the home, and they will cover it, although this costs me an extra $189 a year on my normal premium mind.

What sort of cover? Is it just theft or does it also cover accidental damage?

accidental, and theft, loss, or even just stupidity like leaving in a taxi.

In general, regular contents insurance covers you for things that are within the boundaries of your home that don't leave these boundaries, eg: tv/stereo/fridge.
For things that you take out of the home (laptops/ipods/etc) you need valuables cover which as 13_Black mentioned, adds a little extra premium.

I have my T41p covered as named portable item valued at $4800 under my house contents insurance for approx $96 p.a. extra on my premium.

Note this is normal contents insurance - it does not cover failure defect and specifically excludes any form of cover for the screen (you'll find that most policies do so even for accidental coverage).

I with NRMA.

I once had my Toshiba laptop insured with www.cpfit.com.au. They were recommended by Toshiba. It was a complete cover for $244 a year for a lappy valued at $4900 in 2002. Not sure what's the price now.

I did the whole thing online, mailed them a cheque and the documents were mailed to me.

When I get my Dell last year, I didn't pickup the Dell complete cover, now I'm a bit regret.

If you use your laptop for business make sure you list it.. I spoke to the NRMA last week regarding mine, and they wouldnt cover it AT ALL if it is used for business. I asked for a seperate policy and they wouldnt do that either..

If someone knows of or finds an insurance company covering notebooks for all types of cover please let me know (as im bound to break / leave my notebook behind some time). Ive been lucky til now...

www.itinsurance.com.au

That's who we deal with at work when we sell our notebooks. Quite good from what we've heard in feedback from our customers. They deal only with mobile technology products such as notebooks, PDA's, etc.

I added it to my contents insurance. (GIO, Melbourne)

It didn't need to be nominated if it was kept in the house (useless to me there), but to cover it out of the house cost an extra $100 PA to the policy. (to cover $2100 replacement value)

The insurance explicitly excludes it being covered if stolen from a vehicle though

I've got mine insured under a business name and it has total cover, whether it is lost, stolen etc. from anywhere. We got it through a broker, I'll see if I can find out who the actual insurance company is.

Just got a quote under household insurance. For a $3000 Powerbook, will cost $72-$74 a year, which includes getting it stolen outside the house, and accidental damage. Accidental damage has a $50 excess though.

Much cheaper than itinsurance.com.au, they wanted way too much for this poor student to pay

Which agency are you with?
I'm looking at getting my G4 covered within the next week or so.
