I just got given the game. Can someone tell me whether i need the original WC3 installed to play Frozen Throne? Or can it install and be run by itself?

Er...just to make this clear, since this post was rather mangled.

You'll need Warcraft 3 installed before installing The Frozen Throne. You can still play the original Warcraft 3, as the old shortcuts will be there - but you'll need to change CDs to play War3/TFT as needed.

is anyone else having trouble connecting to battle.net with WC3:ROC? I cant conenct it all. I think the error is that it times out.

WC3 seems to be on the list of application that SP2 has borked but there seems to be no talk/fix from blizzard?
Does it work for anyone else? because doing google searching, i cant find anyone else having problems..maybe its something else causing the problem not sp2.

(Sorry, but didnt want to create another thread for my issue)

If it's a problem with the XP SP2 firewall, when you try to connect to Battle.Net, alt-tab to the desktop and you should see a Windows message.

i have the sp2 firewall off. i dont get any windows message, nothing in the event viewer. have latest wc3 1.16 patch.

i have a linux box as a firewall. but wc3 used to work before. i have made no changes to it. but i havnt played this game in at least 4 months and that was on win2k.
have the latest wc3 patches changed in any way that now i need to change my firewall settings? i have no real rules for outgoing traffic tho. i would have thought i could at least conenct to battle.net, playing/hosting games is another issue but i have port 6112 open anyway.

am i alone with this problem or what?
as i dont see many people complaiining about this.
might re-install it later when i cbf. but i dont see why that would make a difference...

when playing FT on battle.net it actually checks your ROC key as well as the FT key.

me and my friend have our own FT keys but share a ROC key. if one of us is on west and the other trys to connect it would say someone is on the ROC key and i have to play on another realm.

Damn. So i need the original WC3 before i can even play on battlenet. And even if i should 'aquire' the original WC and a key, i still wont be able to play unless i have a real TFT key and a real ROC key.

Has anyone seen wc3 in the bargain bin at EB or somesuch store?

I'm pretty sure it still retails for around $50- My mate got the Battlechest for around $90 or something but it comes with two absolutely useless strategy guides.

What sucks is, if you have two or more computers, you need to crack one of them because it requires the FT CD to play, even though I bought both games. Unless you want to play ROC of course, because the FT CD can run ROC, don't think it works the other way around though...

I might just sell TFT and get ROC instead. Another Battlenet question - if i just have ROC can i realistically play online? Or do I need TFT as well for it to be practical?

Yes, people still play ROC, although not as many as FT. A fair few people complain about FT, saying it unbalances the game and whatnot. A lot of good customs still get made for ROC, suprisingly.
