Question Shuttle & Summer = Problems

I only bought my Shuttle SN45G in May, so I don't know how it goes in hot weather. I have removed the standard Sunon fan and have installed a Coolermaster LED fan (28cfm & 25dB).

At the moment I only have a Radeon 9100 video card, but hopefully in a months or two it will be a 9800Pro.

Are heat problems common for Shuttles, if so, do you have any tips for lowering temps?

Thanks

Hard to tell what will happen until the time comes and the issues start rise from the depths of your cable cluttered Shuttle

I don't think you will have problems though.

After all, being inside a sealed unit, everyone is going to see it.

Do you have a Shuttle? There are vents down each side, and there are also holes at the back where the air can be pushed out.

Your negative person aren't you? I be you see the glass half empty?

been in the sff scene for well over a year now

heat shouldn't be a problem, but expect to have nice high temperatures
but it'll be stable

No, in my opinion the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Anyway, back to topic. The shuttle should run fine, even if in summer it hovers around 60 degrees under load. It might put a damper on your overclocking, but your machine will be stable well up to 80 degrees.

I've got a panaflo on my ICE unit, (the back grille has been cut away to lower flow resistance) and in 35 degree ambient temperatures last summer my 2500+@2200mhz barely topped 63 degrees under heavy load, and that was with the help of a 9700pro.

SN45G w/ 2500+ @ 3200+, 9800Pro.
2 hard disks
Stock cooler & fan.

In ~40C ambient, the box was sitting at 63C under load (BFC server + playing) with no problems. I was drinking water like it as going out of fashion.

YMMV.

I took off the ice unit, used a compass to measure the hole, and then sliced it out with a DSE dremel knockoff.

i found both my sn45g and sn41g2 tended to get quite warm in summer, warm enough to be a problem on occasion especially when overclocked - get one of the shuttle mesh sided cases or mod your current one to allow for good airflow, consider cutting out the rear grill with a nibbler and replacing it with something a little more open, or even consider putting in a larger fan using a fan adapter on the rear of the box.

Default shuttle noise

recently had a power failure, and the shuttle restarted (as per BIOS option) when the power came back on.

I found the box on screensaver mode waiting for me to log in.

When I logged in, the fan went from whatever low speed setting it was on to the max speed - 3500rpm. It stays at this speed all the time.

Now, since this box is on 24/7, I have only noticed how quiet it was, prior to logging into XP.

What could be causing the fan to go max speed when I log in? It was instantaneous, not heat related.

I do have MBM installed, it shows CPU currently idling at 45C (which is about right).

What BIOS setting should I use to have the fan at a lower speed, I thik I have it set as 'smartfan'.
