I'll ask here. Where is that Excel file that you made with the different freezing points of methanol?

Just a general question.
When I was doing my Refrigeration Mechanic Apprenticeship everyone was talking about how good scroll compressors are and how they will dominate the market over hermetics soon. Are they available for home-built systems or was there something wrong with them long term? I could check out a refrig site but I read this and thought someone might know.

To be honest with you I’m not quite sure. I believe the main downside/disadvantage of a scroll compressor is the production costs. Apparently from what I have read, a scroll compressor’s performance can appear at a disadvantage compared with a semi-hermetic compressor. Again, I have not read much about Scroll compressors.

The cost of building them makes it prohibitive. That's why unit's under about 1/3 hp are all reciprocating. They'd be ideal for domestic use because they're so quiet.

The "bars" that you can see on the inside of the fridge and freezer are the evaporator.

Now I'm going to assume here that the evaporator is behind the 'back panel' on the inside of the fridge. Now remove the back panel on the inside of the fridge causing minimal damage if you want to use the fridge. After you removed the internal back panel you should see an aluminium radiator type thing (the evaporator), with a fan over it. That is your evaporator.

This type of fridge is not as common as other ones, what happens is the evaporator 'gets cold' and the fan blows this cold air throughout the fridge and/or freezer. If you look inside the fridge on the back panel you should be able to see some sort of venting system, which is where the air comes from. You will have to be patient if you want to keep the fridge intact, be aware of all pipping, wiring etc around the fridge. Some photos would make things a lot easier for all of us.

Sounds like a frost free where the evap coil is hidden behind the back wall of the freezer and cold air is ducted from there to the medium temp section.

Thanks for that guys (Silver_Platinun and youbloodybeuty). I found the evap just where you both said it was.
SP I won't be salvaging the fridge so I had a fun time hacking into it.

Marbig,
Could you please give me the dimensions of the fan, I'm interested in it (that is if you are not going to use it).

hey is there any chance ya could give us some snap shots of the fridge, and even the compressor so we can see what size it is
cause unless its a good size ya wont get very good temps and would be a waste of time ripping it appart to find ya have to get a bigger on later on.

It is the exact same one as mine, which in return means similar to yours. Hope that makes sense I think my compressors struggling to pull a decent vacumn. I will have to check that out.

I probaly start a thread similar to yours Kayl sometime in the next two weeks.
