I have purchased myself a 2nd hand laptop Toshiba TE2000 from work. 256 mb ram P3 1 ghz 20 gb harddisk .
I want to use it around the home and connect to my cable modem around the home and use the internet. What is the best way to do this ? I have a mobile phone which has Bluetooth and I have a Bluetooth dongle in my USB port but the distance it reaches is only 10 metres. I have WIndows XP SP 2 on my desktop . Does the laptop have a PCMCIA slot?
If so, maybe pickup a cheap 802.11b adapter & wireless router?

Get a DI-614+ or DI-624+
you can connect your cable modem to these, then you get a wireless pc card for you notebook and a wireless pci card for your desktop, and presto sharing internet without wires. |

policy if the card doesnt work or isnt powerful enough. Do you have a router? If so, then grab a cheap minitar access point. If you dont, theres two roads you can walk. 1. You can grab a cheap p133, a pci wireless card, and a copy of monowall, and make your own router that will even do the dishes. This is the most versatile solution, and wont cost any more than $75. 2. You can buy a cheap NAT router/access point combo. These start at roughly $120. My only real advice is to NEVER, EVER, buy consumer dlink network gear. It is not worth the pain.

The ExtremeG+ stuff isn't as nice as the ExtremeG stuff. The G stuff can now do 108Mbit, the G+ will be compatible with the older AirPlus 22Mbit cards at their maximum rate but it'll only max out at 54mbit. I've also found that the drivers for the Atheros-based G650 cards are a little nicer than the TI-based G650+.
I own both. Didn't the TE2000 have a Mini-PCI wireless card slot in it anyway, allowing an internal wireless card to be installed?

Your TE2000 does have the internal slot for a wireless card. Not sure how nice the Toshiba BIOS's are, but perhaps this model will work:
http://www.techtopia.com.au/product_...roducts_id/866 The one listed for the TE200/2100 and Satellite Pro 6100s is a different part number, but the connectors are standard. I'd assume that you'd simply use the drivers intended for the card and the wireless switch would also work. $60 for a .11b card - I've seen the Intel Pro Wireless 2200 (802.11b/g) card for $90 - not sure how compatible this would be with your Toshiba, however. The beauty of this is that it'll be internal - no cards to worry about.
