Hi ppls.
I have started to get in to quite a bit of video editing as of late and need up upgrade or buy another HD. What would be the best way going about this? 1. Simply buy another 120GB seagate and use that in RAID-0? 2. Buy a PCI Sata controller, buy a Raptor 74GB for my OS Boot drive and another Seagate 120GB. Run the 2 Seagate's as RAID-0? (reliability for my OS) 3. Use my Seagate 120GB 7200.7 as a removable drive and buy 2 x 250 or 200GB (size depending on platter density = high sequential transfer speed - Will have to read up on that) and raid-0 those two? Does any one have any other suggestions? The reason I am thinking about buying a Raptor 74GB is one of those drives should be excellent for fast loading of apps due to its high spindle speed and low seek. The lack of platter density makes me think those drives would not be as quick running in a raid-0 config compared to a couple of high density 250Gb or so 7200rpm drives? For video editing anyhow. I am only going to use Seagate drives as I have had a very good run with them. WD drives have let me down in the past and have left a bad taste in my mouth. ![]() Reliability is too much of an issue as I do regular backups. Uni work is stored in multiple places so that also is not an issue. Decisions decisions.

i would definitely go with the raptor for your main drive - seek time is all important there.
i have basically the same setup as number 2. 2. Buy a PCI Sata controller, buy a Raptor 74GB for my OS Boot drive and another Seagate 120GB. Run the 2 Seagate's as RAID-0? (reliability for my OS) i use the raid drive for video editing/encoding and game installs. i have most of my stuff on a raid1 array on another computer. |

Don't waste your money on the Raptors, and don't get influenced by those who are saying that it makes alot of difference because they are just justifying the shitloads of money they spent on drives that are on par with cheaper and bigger drives.

Having said that, I would not get Raptors in this case, because the performance is needed from the large storage drives for video editing. I think the best bet would be a couple of large 7200RPM drives in Raid0 if you want the best performance. It might pay to install a small drive (like a 10Gb if you have one) to put the windows swap file on, to give you a little extra performance when working with large files.

HAHA, xtortion you really hate raptors.
![]() What was your experience with them, what did you replace them with? I only ask because you have posted an almost identical massage in another thread and did not mention what you were running. |

The reason for using a raptor 74gb as an OS drive is that it would be quick, a nice size for an os drive and reliable.
I would then use the 2 x large SATA 7200rpm drives in Raid-0 for video editing and to store games on. I may hang off a little until the maxtor diamondman 10 drives become a little more common. See how reliable they are and buy a couple. |
