Default What type of mem do Dell Laptops use?

I stuck between an Acer Aspire 1681 or a Dell Inspiron 8600! The only thing that puzzles me (and will probably decide which i'll get) is the type of memory dell uses! I know with the acer, i can easily buy so-dimm memory. But what does the dell use? On their website, it costs about $500 just for a 512mb stick! Is it some sort of "special" dell memory?

The Dell 8600 uses PC2700 SO-DIMM DDR memory. PC3200 may also work, too.

What about these from Auspcmarket?
http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index....tegory_id]=442

They all say "Does not fit Dells" but they're SO-DIMM!

I'm confused. There should be no reason why they wouldn't work in Dell notebooks.

$506 inc GST for a 1GB module looks tasty. Yum!

Weird eh? I figured that it'd be cheaper for me to get 512mb from here and 2x256 from dell then getting 256 + 512 from dell

I'm gonna email them and see whats up with it!

The cheapest way to get 1GB RAM on Dell laptop, is to wait for their Double Memory for Free offer. It may be painful to wait, but it will worth it.

I've bought my Inspiron 8500 when Dell was offering free double memory, free HD upgrade, free UWXGA upgrade and free carry bag all at the same time! Believe me, it happens.

Got this response from Auspcmarket:

It'll probably physically fit in a Dell, but going on past customer
purchases (and returns) for memory used with Dells, you've only got about a
50% chance that it will work - Dell's lack of adherance to industry
standards is the cause.

But i guess if it works for u, it should work with the 8600!

I'd say give it a shot. I've bought two sticks of 512MB as-generic-as-you-can-get PC2700 sticks for my Dell 8200 and it works a treat. Put the other pair of PC2100 sticks into an IBM R40 and they still work just fine.
