Well i invested about 15 hours into this game over the weekend and i'm still loving it. I've wiped out the gauls, carthagins and the spanish in that order, now i'm taking egypt apart piece by piece. I took their capitol and surrounding 2 towns in a few turns and was pretty pleased with myself until they started sending their armies at me. It seemed like a never ending barrage of full strength armies coming at me till eventually when i'd defeated over 10,000 of egypts finest i started to bribe them. I had about 180k + gold in my treasury before began my campaign into egypt and now it hovers around ~30k because i'm now constantly building new troops to hold the towns i've taken and to re-enforce my main army. I've found that heavy cavalry kick ass, i usually try to have about 4-6 units of them and i also use about 3 units of wardogs. The rest is filled with urban cohorts, i tried using archers but i found more often then not they'd fire 2 volleys before i wanted my other troops to start moving forward. So i'd just send them to the back to wait for the outcome.

i actually quite like archers...

ive taken a bit over 30 provinces, and the only people left are the Britons, Greeks, Scipii, Senate and Brutii. The Senate started asking me to kill my leaders. I took one out, but when they asked for my uber leader with awesome stats, i said no... Now the Brutii are coming at me reasonably hard. I lost one city, but took it back, and im now bribing most of the armies that enter my territory, or assassinating their leaders. Ive found archers invaluable for destroying the enemy's siege engines. Without them, i would have lost way more cities.

This game is certainly good fun, but i find its taking over my life :P. Too bad i have an assingment to do tonight. Maybe if i finish it, ill go back to some more total war, and see if i can swing the naval battles back my way. The Roman factions have so many ships its not funny, and strangely they are winning some bs battles even when i have the number advantage...

hmm so I guess it was a mistake trying to take the britons early from reading this thread . just been playing total 9 hours past couple days , I've got wars happening on 3 different fronts, got a little garrison on the greek side surrounded by major greek cities and everytime I try to send over reinforcements by ship, the greek warships sink em

I've run out of generals/governors to put in my towns, anyone with tips how to get more of them? I found using an army to wipe out bandits sometimes promoted one of the 'commoners' to be a general and then use him for governor.

current tactic I'm using is moving a governor between 3 cities, each one set the build/reinforcements, then move him to the next town and repeat. seems to work ok.

There's your way, or bribe enemy generals (expensive), or simply wait. I find in the later game I have more generals than I know what to do with.. not to mention, I'm playing Egypt, and their management skills are rubbish! ALL of them! wtf.

I posted the same problem earlier in this thread. I later found the answer. Don't lose your guys/gals early in the game and you'll have tonnes later on when you need them. Don't be afraid to reject some no hoper that your daughter wants to marry, especially if he's middle-aged or even in his 30s. Those skanks will marry anybody

Currently playing as Brutii and thoroughly enjoying some smaller skirmish type battles where you don't have to worry so much about rogue enemy cavalry and just enjoy the beautiful graphics. I've found Brutii to be considerably harder than Julii or Scipii. Brutii face the Greek Cities and Macedon almost immediately, whereas the Scipii have no immediate threats, and the Julii just need to wipe out the pathetic and unworthy Gauls.

Yeh later in the game they just spam you with generals. I'm having trouble moving them all to a town to govern

I had one of my generals daughters bring home some poor arse excuse for a husband, i let her marry him, i made him faction heir, and 5 turns later the senate asked me to kill him hehe.

Currently playing as the Julii, and mounting offensives against both the Gauls and the Carthagians. I sent a diplomat to Macedon, and stumbled upon a young 16-year old General from Macedonia, with the trait of Military Genius. Sound familiar? It sounded almost exactly like Alexander the Great! I sent him to lead an assault against Carthage. It's incredibly cool how the game accidentally mimics great military figures from Ancient History.

It really depends who you play against - if it's against mates then they become heaving battles that ebb and flow really well. If it's against and unknown or someone who just wants to win with specific units it becomes a defensive stalemate with no real action. I've shattered a few defending type armies before who just refused to enter into battle (and in many cases i was the defending army!).

Like the multiplayer aspects of all MP games, if your opponents are idiots then nothing in the world we save it. At the moment, the games needs some netcode work and a clean up of the totally defensive players.

How's your rating with the plebs? I've got nearly 40 provinces at 210bc and on the senate rankings screen it says that although the senate fear me, they don't dare go against me because my popularity with the plebs is so high.

The plebs love a conqueror so maybe you just need to expand a little faster. Building arenas etc seems to help too. Capturing Zeus should also help but unfortunately it doesn't work properly. Hope the patch comes soon.

Couldn't find the thread with the elephants vs wardogs clip so I uploaded it here (3.3Mb)

Try dissabling fsaa and aniso. They often cause screenies to come out black on nvidia cards. Maybe it's the same with ati?
