Default laptop ram

I have a friend who want to upgrade the ram in this laptop, and was told that he have to fill both ram banks, by the computer shop. Is this correct? or is it like in pc where you could fill only one to the two banks.

you only need 1 to work. never seen a laptop which requires dual mem.
