Default DAMN! There goes another optical drive!

Well here's my optical drive rant again.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but over the years, optical drives have given me more pains in the arse than a McDonalds Chilli Burger.

I don't burn many things on this computer here at home, maybe two or three CD's per month (no DVDs), but over four years, I am now onto my FOURTH CD-RW, DVD-RW etc. Today, my LG GSA 4081b DVD burner (multi drive) keeled over. Despite being given glowing recommendations, this drive has failed after burning just 12 (yes 12) CDs! And it's just under 1 year old...(can't find receipt...double DAMN!). Previous ones have been ASUS, Pioneer and Lite-On.

I'm just going to fork out the extra cash and buy a Plextor...like I should have done in the first place.

Funny thing though, my 6 x Ricoh CD-RW at work, that's more than four years old just keeps chugging away...not one single coaster yet.

Pike

P.S. Yes, I've tried it on a separate IDE channel and updated its firmware and had it as master and slave...then I lost my temper, ripped the bastard out and hit it REALLY hard with a 1,000 gm ball pien hammer. It made a very satisfying crunch as it shattered into a hundred little pieces.

In my experience LG has been terrible when it comes to lasting. Lite-on are great for optical drives, and my sony 8x cd-rw is still working pretty well. (ofcourse now sony rebadge lite-on drives)

Is there something common to all the optical drives, e.g. same power supply in your computer the whole time?

Clearly its not limited to one brand, and you'd have to be one unlucky motherfucker to get a dodgy drive on each one. Generally this indicates that theres a common problem, although I can't imagine that you still have the same motherboard for the whole time. This IS overclockers here after all.

Could (and I'm clutching at straws) even be dodgy home power, but I doubt it.

Two different motherboards and three different PSUs.

Maybe it's just bad Feng Shui or whatever the hell it is. Maybe I don't think positive thoughts about my optical drives each day.

Incidentally, I too have had (and still have) a Pioneer 16X DVD drive in the same computer which has given me no trouble...maybe it just gets jealous of any competition I install with it. When I'm not looking, my Pioneer causes the other drives to short out or something...sibling rivalry if you will.

Oh well...here's hoping my bad Optical Drive Kahma is at an end.

Could it be a dodgy IDE cable, or maybe dust on the laser (or remains thereof)?

LOL, interesting the way you physically mark the drive as 'faulty'.

Maybe it's trapped in the machine world... "I killed you Mr. Anderson, I watched you die; with a certain satisfaction I might add."

EVERY creative drive i've ever come across has died, or stopped working correctly in some way...

Lite-on and Pioneer are alright though, it would seem!

HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA! That is EXACTLY what I was thinking just as Ball Pein Hammer met its intended victim.

Possesion sounds an interesting theory, perhaps I should call a priest?

FYI, many of Sony's drives are manufactured by LiteON.
