Default maxtor 300gig 16meg cache

at scorptech
Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 Serial ATA 300GB, SATA/150, 7200rpm, 16Mb Cache, NCQ for $495.00

i was just wondering how would this hardrive be compared to a western digital 74gig 10000rpm raptor. Would the performance of the 16meg cache be a big performance boost as hardrives went from 2meg to 8meg cache. Also does anyone know of any reviews for this hardrive?

from reviews

WD raptor 63MB/s
Maxtor Plus 10 52MB/s

not far off it seems plus Maxtor Plus 10 modelsupports NCQ so if you had a NCQ controller you'd be flying!

only other SATA drive in OZ to have NCQ support are 160GB Seagate 7200.7 listed at secret.com.au @ $165/each

Does this mean that all SATA 7200.7 160gb's are NCQ? Because I've had one since last december and I'm interested in finding out if my drive supports this function.

erm what about the 200gb 7200.7s avalable almost everywhere [umart]

also being a 300g drive it should have 100g platters, makes it faster again, 52mb/s sounds a little slow, the 200gb 7200.7s pulles 63mb/s [36gb raptor does 62 iirc and the 74 does 72mb/s] (from various benches, mostly winbench and atto)

Default Great!

woohoo!
So, what's the difference between the two 160gb 7200.7's then?
I'll have to go hunting for a NCQ supporting SATA controler then (I'm guessing my Siil3112 doesn't support NCQ)

I think they just wanted to introduce a new model numbering convention.

So my two ST3160023AS 160gb Seagate Satas' support NCQ? Is it worth upgrading to a controller that can take advantage of this?

hmm interesting, thats a little disapointing i thought all the 7200.7s range supported it, seems only the 160 does...

the question is, how much do you use your pc for random read/write? ive also heard ncq isnt much use without multiprocessors [or HT] and if the software being used isnt optimised for async read/write [multiple software accessing the hdd though, with HT or multiprocessors, and ncq will be a bonus]

i think some 23AS ending aren't NCQ supported, so it's confusing - i'd ask retailer to confirm with their disty/suppliers and if they say yes and it doesn't support you have a course/reason for exchanging
