Default Gigabyte's 6800GT

Gigabyte seems to have an interesting cooler/heatpipe design with their new 6800GT.
Notice that the fan is on the back of the card, which faces up once installed instead of sitting underneath like all other cards.........

is that a PCI-E card only?

is the core on the bottom? and the heatsink on top like a zalman style heatpipe thing? looks to be the case, but god damn it's stylish.

I've got mine now, very nice card. The cooling seems to be effective, 50 Degree Idle Temps gets to about 75 at load after an hour of gaming but return back to 50 degrees very rapidly (10-20 seconds)

I have already tested to see if it does Ultra speeds which it does without breaking a sweat, tested it at 400/1100 for 3 hours on 3d Mark2001 looped and 2 hours of Richard Burns Rally, not problems. Since then i have put it back to default, no point in using the extra power if you don't need it...........yet

Nice package, was very surprised to see Doom 3 in the package even tho i had sold my original copy after getting bored of it was still a nice addition. The card itself seems very well made as all gigabyte cards and looks very nice in my case.

Here are a few pics i took:

Size of the box compared to a video, this is one massive box although this seems to be the trend for video cards these days.

The back/top of the card, interesting to see the fan on the back of the card compared to the front. (Sorry bout the shadow)

Here's the front of the card, again not much cooling on the front just a big slab of metal, not sure wether it's copper.

What it looks like in action, pretty

The underside while running, the heatpipes seem to do a decent job.

So has anyone else got one of these cards yet, if so what do you think of it?

Hmmm those temps seem very high! My Gainward 6800GT 'Golden Sample' runs at 47-49c idle and 55-58c load.
How is your airflow in your case, how many fans do you have?

Have you had a chance to run 3dmark03-05?

My mate bought one of these at the computer markets on Saturday. Unfortunately when he plugged it in he just got artifacts all over the screen (ie it was completely stuffed).

Sucks cause he just spent $800 on a vid card and now he will most likely have to wait months while it gets RMA'ed before he gets to use it. Poor fulla.

Now he has to use a Radeon 9000 in his ninja PC that he just purchased/assembled - it's just not right.

Another vote for sexiness appeal

Although it doesn't sound like the heat-pipe is effectively cooling the card? Or are the 6800's just hot-as in general?

Also, how hard would it be to remove the stock heat-pipe? Perhaps you could check what kind of paste/thermal pad is underneath?

But then again... maybe that's asking for a bit much... since it's your brand new baby haha
