Default network communications problem

Basically im setting up a small home network. I connected my cpu to my netcomm router using 14 meters of cat5 cable using a keystone jack at each end, (Which I wired myself).

When connected to the route my cpu does establish and recognise a connection as does the router, but that is all, at first when it is connected there is very little upstream data sent from my cpu but NO downstream, even when I attempt to access the network. There is obviously a communications problem.

When I moved my cpu next to the router and use a 1meter cable it worked perfect. Can anyone help me out?

Thanx in advanced guys

To me it sounds like a badly crimped cable.

I didnt know that you could hook up a cpu to a router..

But yes it sounds like a dodgy cable. If it works with one cable and not another....chuck the non working one out or re-crimp it

if by up/downstream data you mean packets recieved/sent that your newtork card properties tell you, then it could just as simply be you have different ip ranges set on the router and computer. If you have ip assigned on the pc then set it to auto

that is a very misleading statement, a cable can respond perfictly fine even though it may still be buggered. I suggest you just cut the cable and start over, when you crimp make sure you put all ur strength into it or ull notice ull get the same problems. If a bit of that metal aint in the wire properly or not entirly you will get dataloss.

He's also assuming turkthejurk's router is running DHCP.
