Default Choppy sound affected by CPU

OK, my computer hasnt been formatted in a while and atm formatting is not an option

Recently my sound card has been playing up, it's an onboard AC97 card on a gigabbyte vt600 p-l board

When *any* sound at all play it seems to be choppy, it gets choppier as the CPU works more, does anyone know a solution for this?

Also, can anyone recommend programs to clean up your computer? I was thinking systemworks but thats a bit big, Im looking for something that works well

Have you installed the most recent motherboard / sound drivers? If you have, do you have the reference drivers that came on a CD with the mobo?

In windows use the clean up and defrag options under the system tools menu that'll free up space.
