i was looking at those little pentium based IBM netstation PC's.
some of them have 233intel processors and usb, 10/100 lan etc etc. i've seen that people are using Linux on them, but it looks like they are getting them to boot from the network. I have found one with a 2gb hdd installed, this will be to run appz locally on the machine, i was kind of hoping that someone might know if it is possible to boot one of these machines from the HDD and by using a USB ADSL modem and the onboard NIC get a statefull firewall in place? anyone?

Yes, that should work fine. The only thing would be to check if the USB ADSL modem is supported.
