Hey everyone, are steam updates automatic? Or is there somehow that I can get steam to check for updates? Is there any way I can also get steam to check for updates for HL2?
Cheers, - Complexity.

Every time you launch steam, it will automatically update all your steam games that you have installed.
![]() You can check if it is updating any games, but right clicking on the steam icon in your taskbar and selecting 'monitor'.

By default all steam updates (for games) are automatic.
To turn on/off automatic updating go into the main menu, then to PLAY GAMES, then right click and go to properties of the game you want to configure. This is where you can turn automatic updating There isnt a button to click to check for updates; its either automatic or its off ![]() Core steam updates are automatic though (and I dont know how to turn it off; not that you'd want to anyway)

like many of you i enjoy playing counter strike. so this morning i get up have a shower have get some breakfast, boot up to pc, connect to my paltry 56k (yes i can play CS on56k) and expect to have connected to a server by the time i have finished eating. that was at 8pm CST (central standard time) this morning, now apparently steam has to update some files, so i think yeah shouldn't take more than 30mins, it hasn't taken any longer than that before. its now 10:25 cst and steam has managed to update 0%. WOW (no world of warcraft pun intended)
actually let me update that as of 10:26 CST steam has just jumped to 28% and it's probably not gunna go any further than that. watching my connection icon in the bottom right corner i can see a whole lot of nothing. oh the joy. when are ValVe going to realise that not everyone has broadband, yes i can get it, but at the momment its cost prohibitive for me. Edit: steam has just reset itself to 0% than proceded to shut down. im guessing im going to have to start all over again. this is really beginning to S.H.I.T. me

Steam has been called a broadband delivery system ever since the beginning. It's unfortunate that you have to use 56k but thems the breaks. You just need to get yourself locked into a nice content server (Internode for example) and you'll be able to get all the updates no probs at 5k. |

maybe i should add more to the story, at present i live in the butthole of australia, Alice Springs. another piece of information that i forgot to add, is that my farther (can't believe i still say that, im 20 for god's sake), works for telstra, and even he believes that currently Broadband in australia is too much of a rip-off to even consider getting it installed. here in the alice we can get pretty much any broadband service installed albeit a few of the smaller companys that only service the eastern coast of australia.
steam did managed toi get to 100% then closed itself, restarted and is now doing something, i can't tell cause the progress bar won't show up for me. Edit: about 2mins after this post, steam came up with a fatal error ------------------------------------------- |Fatal Error: Failed to load platform modules. | -------------------------------------------

i guess to beat this just keep steam up to date as in get it crackin every couple of days.
i have had my pc on 24/7 for the last few weeks with steam running. andi noticed that it doesnt downloadanything. the only way i can get it to update again is by closin and restarting. only last saturday did i have a couple of problems. just earlier today i did it agai and it updated.probably took abotu 5-10 minutes. not that i was going to play. i do think if ur on cable/adsl steam isnt too bad to have but i do understand if ur in buthole central then it would be gay. i personally have dialup 28.8k at home and i wouldnt ever bother with online gameing either. hell i sold my own dialup modem cause it wasnt worth havin internet at home. well on my bro's duron 1200 i guess for emergency withdrawls

what i cant understand is that for the last 15mins it (steam) hasnt transfered anything over. there is no major network activity and the bloody thing just sits at 0%. Im fine with Valve trying to beat piracy and improve gaming etc but this steam is such bullshit since they dont even support it properly.
sigh

Ok dunno if anyone has mentioned this one but it sure stuffed Steam up for me till I read the Steampowered forums....
So remove (add/remove programs) X-Fire if it is loaded on your machine otherwise Steam will not connect. I guess Spybot would have found this too.....
