Default The Tablet PC Thread

Well I have searched in here and it appears as though nobody is discussing tablet PC's. We used to have one here at work that could plug into a body as a functional imac look a like computer then you could just take the screen and use it like a jumbo sized PDA.

I think there is a great market for tablet PC's as a great paper saver, instead of getting the newspaper every morning you just surf over to cnn/slashdot/ocau on your tablet PC and read the news on there. Also things like E-books would be great, reading them just like a normal sized book but without paper.

So what tablet PC's do you own or have used? What brands do you like and would reccomend? Do they have them small/thin enough to be able to use as a newspaper replacement, and do any of these models have inbuilt wireless? This is a thread to discuss anything you would like to do with tablet PC's.

While I was shopping for laptops, the 12" LG LU20 'tablet' laptop caught my eye:

I say 'tablet' because it's not a true tablet PC. The screen may fold over but it doesn't have a screen where you can write stuff on it. Still if you want only that functionality, it's pretty good for the price.

Most tablet models do come with wireless - they don't lose any standard laptop functionality/features.

Personally, I'd never buy one because they are one of the most horribly overpriced pieces of technology in the market today. No way is it worth paying $1000+ extra just for a folding screen and stylus input.

we have a few tablets here and the users seem to find them okay. They do the job really, but then again it all depends on what you use it for. Meetings and stuff its all good to take with you to take notes and review things, plus to throw on a presentation by plugging in a projector.
I personally am not a big fan of the tablet but each to their own.

Although I haven't got one myself, I've had a chance to play with a whole heap of them at work etc, and personally, I've had two issues with them...
For starters, they're still a bit laggy.... with the latest p-m lv's, they're getting better.. but still a bit too laggy for my liking.
Secondly.. my terrible scrawl that is my handwriting seems to be a bit of an issue for them... again, the OCR is getting better, but it seems it's just not for me.
It's mainly been the toshiba's and Acer's that I've tested out.

i personally own, and run a fujitsu t3010d, which I've found to be very satisfactory. Games such as warcraft and anything not TOO intensive will run fairly well with tweaked settings. The pen does NOT work for games (generally).

When i first got it, pre-sp2, i had a lot of problems with a twitching pointer using the pen, so i had to refrain from using it for accurate work, but the advent of sp2 meant an improved support for my tablet, and since, the input has gotten a helluva lot better.

It is quite useful for uni work, as I can take notes, and using onenote from the office suite, it's an awesome binder. paper emulator anyone?

however one thing i've yet to find out about is drawing onto pdf files, i haven't had cause to yet, but i may look into it now.

I agree they are more laggy than a pda with a third the power, they are too heavy and thick to be a useful replacement to a notepad, notebook, or pda. They may get there, I am personally looking at the oqo with intrest.

if i have not misunderstood this sentence..if you have adobe acrobat...you can convert any word document into a pdf with one simple button click..so if you have a word document with your sketches you can convert it to pdf easily..you just still cant directly write onto pdf files
