Default Laptop (Which one?) (Dell $1000 off??!)

Hey guys, im in the market for a laptop for uni and the occasional gaming session

It need to have 60gb hdd, 15" widescreen lcd, 512 (2x256 DDR 333), 128mb 9600 pro or better, 802.11g.

I was looking at a customized Dell 8600 or 9100, what you think?

And when would the next $1000 off day from dell be around abouts?

Budget is $2100, but i may be able to afford to go over slightly.

The last $1000 off offer ended on the 20th of December so it's definitely the last one of this year. The next one may either be several months away (because they were trying to increase sales figures for the year, so don't expect another one until near the close of 2005), or it'll be somewhere near next month (to follow the monthly discount patterns they've been giving recently), or maybe even somewhere in between. The point is, is that nobody knows.

For $2500 (with the $1000 off), I ordered a Centrino 2GHz, 100GB HDD, 128MB 9600pro turbo, 512MB RAM, 15.4", carry bag, DVD-ROM, floppy drive but it's surely to go down in price

If you want a laptop for uni, think twice before you go for the big screen.

15.4" inchers are heavy (centrino 15.4" is over 3KG). Toshiba make very high quality laptops, so it'll be a good choice if it fits you price range

At the end of the day, you really feel the extra kilogram. If you arent planning to put the machine on a desk, get the smaller screen.

If you're put off by the weight, just do some weight training at the gym. After that, you won't notice that you're carrying a 3kg lappy I hate 12" x86 laptops as they all have shitty onboard graphics (but I do love the size/mobility and the weight)

the laptop in itself is quite light (2.5kg) but the carry case that I bought with the laptop weights in at about 4kg!

it looks like they took away some of the choices you could have in chosing your parts because of people like me that ordered a dvd-rom instead of a dvdrw which inturn saved me about $240 off the already low price
