Default LG LS50-H13A for $2800, good price or rip?

Ok, before uni starts for me, i want to buy a decent laptop with a budget of under $3000.

Initially, i was looking at the Benq Joybook 7000 but i spotted something more interesting.

LG LS50- Click Here

Highlights of this LG laptop:
-Centrino 1.8Ghz
-1GB of RAM
-ATi 9700 64MB
-80GB HDD
-DVD writer

My friend bought this laptop for $2300 from Umart because the model she bought was an unopened demo. Umart normally offers this for $2794 which i think is a decent price tag. So far i couldn't find anything else that could beat this price.

The only downside of this laptop which i found is that the warranty is only one year and this laptops lacks infra-red.

Umart's Price

Coming down to questions:

1.)Can i find a laptop with similar spec for a better price?
2.)Does LG have a bad reputation with laptops?
3.)Can this laptop run games such hl2, sims2 and doom3 decently?
4.)Am i better off buying a no-brand laptop?

To finish off my post, i would like to say thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

Used, played and done almost everything on this same notebook...

For the price, you'll be hard beating it. Also, most notebooks that you'll be looking at will only come with 1 yr warranty. Try seeing how much to extend this?

LG's are not bad laptops... Not the best build quality, but good enough, and sturdy as well...

Maybe the dell 8600 would of been good at $2650'ish with there $1000 off

Hmm, personally, i dont really like the looks of the dell.

The 8600 looks bulky and i found the grey plastic very bland. It seems to remind me of laptops back in the age of 1990s.

Anyway, i thought the $1000 discount offer has ended. Correct me if i'm wrong

By the way, IXUS430, do you own this LG laptop?

Nope...

Sold played and used it.

Look the LG's are good for what they offer. I would factor in a mandatory $190 for the LG extended battery, giving easily 7 hours on a charge.

DVD burning seemed VERY slow too, nearly like 2x rather than the 4x it supposed to be
