Hey there guys,
I got offered a laptop from a mate for $700~ and its a Acer Travelmate 630. The specs he says its got is as following: 1.8 P4 Ghz Cpu 512mb ram (not sure if its ddr or sd) 30gb hdd 32mb geforce vga dvd-rom 15inch lcd with standard features such as usb, infra red, lan, modem, s-video Now my questions are: - Any of you guys out there with the same laptop, can you share your previous experiences with it? How does it perform and how long does the battery last? - Is the 1.8Ghz CPU one of those Pentium 4 Mobile processors? So does that mean its equal to about 2.6Ghz desktop processor? - I plan to get this for Uni to write my notes and stuff and for the occasional movie and some music here and there. Would this be sufficient for me, especially for its price? How is the price by the way? Sorry if my questions seem abit "noobie", I've have abit of experience about desktops but I don't know much about laptops. So any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. ![]() Cheers guys, Andy

No It's just a standard P4M (Pentium 4 Mobile).
It would be fine for a standard notebook for Uni. It can a little bulky to carry around all day. Check the condition of the battery since its abput 3 years old. |

Yes it is one of those processors but no it is not equal to a 2.6ghz or thereabouts processor. It is simply a P4M-1.8Ghz cpu. The laptop is sufficient for you, but it will be very bulky, may weight around 3 kilos, and its not suitable for mobility. Make sure you're close to a power point socket. It's not bad for the price, but it honestly depends on the condition it is in.

Thanks guys. Well I've spoken more with him and he said that he recently had the battery changed. He said when new it would last about 3 hours depending on what task were done and that now if doing the same task it would last about 2 and a half hours.
Poor thing about it not being a Centrino I just read more about them and t 4+ hours of use is bloody awesome! Too bad there so dear. I guess I should have a look at it and see what kind of condition its in. Andy

I have one right beside me - my current customer site has 100+ of the same model.
Fairly typical P4M technology. Aimed squarely at business use rather than SOHO functionality. That said with 512MB of memory they motor along quite well. Ours have Orinocco Wireless built in - but the integrated antenna aren't very good. Ours have CD-RW/DVD drives - which are removable and can be swapped with FD or DVD or even DVR/RW (v. expensive). $700 seems reasonable for a laptop of that specification presuming everything works. What do you mean by typical P4M technology and what is SOHO? Well the price is actually $650 now and it comes with charger and bag as well.
I thought if it was a bargain I'd get it, but if its only about what its really worth maybe I should reconsider.
