Default Registry App

Hey guys, background first. I partition my drive as follows: 5GB Windows, 20GB Apps/Games, xGB Stuff. This saves me reinstalling a bunch of stuff whenever I format. Unfortunately, some of my apps and games need their registry entries intact to be patched, or on the odd case even to run. What I'm after is a tool that I can use to scan the registry before and after I install something, and from that create a .reg file that I can then import after a format. I know I could do it with one of the Windows Server tools, but that really smacks of effort.

I'm just after something simple for WinXP, it doesn't sound too exotic. Any suggestions?

So far I can find only commercial programs that have any real ease of use.

RegSnap does have a limted trial version.

I've had limited success using RegMon for this task. You may have more success, but in all likelyhood something may reach out across the internet and stab you in the face.

Altiris RapidInstall does something. I hate the company because their website infuriates me, but the program does, I dunno, something.

RegCool has a compare function.

Bingo! RegShot takes a snapshot of the registry before and after installation. No auto-undo feature, but it's freeware. Download at PCWorld.

Excellent, I'll take a look at all of those. Thanks.

A note. Give XP 10GB, because i've done what your doing, and 5GB is barly enough for the system, WinXP likes its space, otherwise its slow

7 gb is adequate for me. 5 wouldn't cut it.

If you install apps on a separate drive, you enhance speed (reduce loading time) and reduce the space needed for the OS drive.

5GB is plenty. I keep all my games and apps on D:, don't really use My Documents, download to E:, and generally have 1-2GB free.

Depends on what you're storing on the system partition, but 5gb can handle the windows installation and a fair amount of apps easily. I've a box with a 5GB partition:

~ 2GB to installation, including 128mb pagefile / 384MB Hiberfil
~1.5GB of apps, including MS Office and several Graphics Designing programs.

All games and my files go onto the other partition. The only thing I can't seem to have control is The Sims 2 INSISTS on installing ~400mb of data onto the "My Documents" folder.

I have a 10GB partition using only 4GB. Than again, my swap file is on another drive while my installations are on yet another drive. Makes for ultra-fast load times.

You could just back your registry up before and then do your install , and then import the backup. I think that may do the trick
