Question W2K profiles

I use a notebook computer and log on to two different networks. One network requires logging on to a DOMAIN, and the other does not. When I log on to W2K Prof., two user profiles are created. One is used when logged onto the DOMAIN, and the other is used when logged onto the local computer. These two profiles have the same user name and password, but W2K treats them as independant profiles. The problem with this is that when one profile is updated, the other is not (e.g. desktop settings).

Is there an easy way to log on to both a DOMAIN and the local computer, but only using one W2K profile????

Ok well, if you just try and log in as if you're logging onto the Domain from home and theres no domain controller, Win2k will still log you on with your locally saved profile which should be exactly the same as the last one you used when you were logged onto the Domain

You'll get an error something like this "Windows cannot locate your roaming profile and has logged you on using your locally stored profile etc etc.."

There is a different way whereby you can set up a differetn Hardware profile, most Laptops are set up this way so you select on Startup a "On the network" or "Off the network" hardware profile which should then take your NIC out of it if its "Off the network"

I'm a bit scratchy on the Hardware profiles setup, but someone else may be able to help

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sounds good in theory, but I've found that when logging on to a DOMAIN, and the DOMAIN controller is not present, I have trouble accessing the network that is not a DOMAIN.

The hardware profiles suggestion is again good in theory, except that the NIC is needed at all times. I can't have it disabled in one profile, as this profile would not be able to access the network.

Thanks anyway for your time.

Ok, I understand now

I dont think its possible to keep the same profile for 2 different Domains.

Unless, you create a share from the profile you want on your local PC and then point your 'Roaming profile" to this. It may help, but I feel some of the settings will be mixed up.

It depends on what you want to do.

If you need basic network access why not ask the Domain Admins for a static IP at each site and configure the other information such as gateway, DNS etc

Don't forget you can assing multiple IP address to a single device.

Bye for now.
