IP Address : 192.168.0.xxx
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.0.1
DNS 1 192.168.0.1
DNS 2 192.168.0.1

Workgroup ( Set this to WORKGROUP Not MSHOME make sure all are the same)

Windows ICS Shares the internet on 192.168.0.1 on Win98/2k/xp/2003
( Also ICS has a mini DCHP server built into it , so you can leave it on AUTO Assign ( IF THE ICS BOX is on all the time)

Hardware router/dsl modem's often have it set to 192.168.0.100 or 192.168.1.xxx range ... It can be changed to suit ...

Also another common IP Range for ADSL / Cable / Router / Modems is 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254

Typical commands to check network settings is :

winipcfg ( windows program)
ipconfig ( dos program ) [Note : Windows 95 doesnt have these commands)

If youre ip is 169.x.x.x Turn off AUTO Assign and enter in a ip or renew the network ip lease ( ipconfig /renew or disable and re enable the nic )

You can but you have to boot into safe mode. Really only good as a repair option if the permissions get fubar. Once you boot back into windows normally it reverts to simple file sharing again.

If there is a reason for this explain it. People won't do things just because you say so, have some reason behind it. Personally I don't know why you shouldn't myself.

Trivial info, 95 doesn't have ipconfig. Anyone still having to use 95 probably knows this though.

Yeah Windows Networking works better when everyone is on the SAME Workgroup Network name, and especially in Mixed OS enviroments ..
MSHOME is a workgroup name that the XP wizzard puts in ... Workgroup has worked fine in win95,win98,nt,2kpro and 2003 .. I don't know why microsoft had to change it in xp. I hope Windows VISTA/Longhorn uses WORKGROUP.

Windows File Sharing with Windows Vista Beta 1 ( Longhorn Build 5112)

Windows file sharing isnt documented atm in Windows Vista Beta 1 . Althou its simular as Windows 2000 , 2003 and XP .

It has a new Sharing Wizzard , which seems to be a cross between win2k pro and SFS XP style . It still has 'Simple File Sharing' and Classic 2k pro style permision sharing . At testing the Windows Vista Beta 1 , sharing files via 'Guest' Account doesnt work

Windows Vista Beta 1 default workgroup setting is now back to Workgroup unlike Windows XP Home were it was MSHOME

Files must be shared via Administrator at the monent (Still testing to get guest working )

Kind of stupid here, but I wonder if there is a way to allow users to read shared files but not copy it!
I am sharing movies on our home LAN and whenever someone try to copy processing consuming goes up to 100% and I hate that!!

Can i just add that were it says that XP HOme can't... it should read.. XP Home CAN...

cos i ahve Vista hOMe Premiumn... and my sister has XP Pro andmy lappy is XP Pro and my dad is windows 95 (but he doesn't connect) and my mum has XP HOme.... I checked this in dis belief...

and i can get onto the network START > Networks > HOME > MUM and i can get into to see her shared files... she on the other hand can aswell...

I have several times shared photos i took and then she can copy them onto her computer and She has a printer connected to her computer which my sister and I and both access.,,. (printer is not connected to the router... instead as a USB device to the computer then shared...)...

File Sharing in Vista Has Been Added, as we are seeing alot of people asking this questions so here it is. this is for general sharing if you want more advanced options feel free to ask questions I'm sure someone knows more then me

Step 1: Right click your netorking Icon in the task bar then select network and Sharing center.

Step 2: down arrow on Password Protected sharing, then select turn off Password Protected Sharing.

Next there are two ways of getting to this I'll the post easiest option

Step 1: Go to the file or folders you wish to share, right click, then select Share..., then click on share, then using the drop down menu select everyone, click add, then click on the "share" button next to cancel.

next it will say "sharing Items" this may take a few minutes , then it will say that your file/s are shared and give you a \\ address..

then anyone on your wired/ wireless network will be able to access the files, by just clicking on the "network" icon on the desktop it should bring up all the PCs onthe network, then by clicking on each icon yu "should" be able to see the files/ folders being shared and you "should" be able to access them, if not go back and try again..

alto fo people miss the "add" button / option which means anyone onthe network cansee the but can't access it jsut go back and re do it...

Does this method of file sharing in Vista make it easier for hackers to access your files from the net?
