Here's what I have at the moment.
Fedora Core 3 as a file/scan/print server. Now, I can break it down and just have a scan and printer server (via HP "All-in-one" and HP ColorLaserjet), as my family and I don't use fileserving functions all that much (more like hardly ever). The thing is, I want to be able to set this up such that I use a bootable CD that loads up via RAM. (ie : LiveCD) This way, I can take the HDD out and use it for something else. (Has the advantage of power off without the need for proper shutdown process...Like M0n0Wall.) Anyone see a distro out there like this? (I'm wondering if there's already a project that's done this...Otherwise, I'll grab something like Knoppix, strip it down and customize it.) |

I'm sure the printer sharing wouldn't be a problem but the scanner might be. Out of interest what sort of scanner is it?

Using HP 2550L Color LaserJet and HP 2310 "All-in-One" (Printer/Scanner).
HP is good enough to provide Linux drivers, and I have no problem with either device in Fedora Core 3. Once the driver is loaded, and SANE picks it up, everything is cool. Client PCs (whether Windows/Linux/Unix/Mac), need to load up an app that allows you to control the scanner via SANE through the network. (remote scanning). I have been doing research on this, and recorded the info. (if you're curious about exploring the idea yourself). http://forums.techwatch.com.au/viewt...t=4209&start=0 (Scroll down to the bottom...The info is on the last post of that page). Result? Network printer/scanner! ![]() Now...To make a LiveCD based on this concept.

I've been making something similar to what you're after for about the past 15 months. It's basically a server on a cd which runs file/print/internet servers automagically, and will display a tv media player and configuration interface by default. I've been using it on my server for about 9 months, where it controls the internet connection, plays videos on the tv, records tv, shares network storage, shares a winxp printer (i hope), etc.
Unfortunately I don't have the hp printer drivers you mentioned, or any scanner support in it. But i'll take a look and see how easy they are to add. If I have any success i'll post back here. But otherwise if you're really determined to make a live linux cd then you'll learn a lot about how linux works in general, which seems to be what you're after. |

OK cool.
Here's two links related to Fedora and LiveCD. This one is a nice long document on it. http://people.redhat.com/dmalcolm/st...inux-HOWTO-en/ The folks here have made a server LiveCD using Fedora and have other utilities and docs on customising it for your own needs. http://www.linux4all.de/ |
