Question buying dell from the US??

I was planning to get a Dell inspiron XPS gen2, but hey it's not available in Australia. The nex thing is the 9300, with full config ends up at approx 5K.

If you then look at the prices in the US it's like 3K, and an even better configuration.

Now I want to get a Inspiron XPS gen2 directly for the US, anyone have an idea how to do that??

Dunno, but get me one too.

It might even be easier for you to get it from the UK - I think it's just launching there and they share the same power standards as us dont they?

You'll need to have the laptop sent through a freight forwarder. shopthestates.com is a reasonably good one.

I would check notebookreview.com for coupons, as every second week they offer it with double ram +$750 off.

Dell USA are much cheaper than Australia, especially with their coupons. (Although Dell AUS recent 33% sale on the 9300 came out cheaper than the USA)

A few things with buying from Dell USA, they only accept Credit Cards Issued from a US bank. They only deliver to US addresses. So your going to have to find someone in the USA to buy for you. Then get them to ship it to Australia. Then you got to hope Customs doesn't slam a tax on the laptop when it arrives here.

Customs will charge you 10% gst, and a $47 processing fee. There is no way around this, unless you bring it back in hand luggage and dont declare it.

Do remember to pay extra for a 3 year NBD warranty, else you wont recieve international coverage.

You'll have to send them funds by wire, and this will cost another $100.

That's an idea...How much to borrow a relative of yours...

I might try one of the freight forwarding companies, one of them seems to have experience with Dell, Alternatively I am looking at the Acer 8100 which could be easier.

Would you still need a step-down power convertor like all other electrical goods from the states? Or are laptops universally rated as they assume you're going to use them in other countries?

No, all laptops (insert disclaimer here) of a decent brand have multivoltage and frequency capable adapters, aka "the brick".

Nevertheless read what is on it first, assuming that people can read, if not ask your parunds, if they can't read....

It's cheaper for most laptop manufacturers to just have one universal power supply for 90-260V/50-60hz, and just shipping the appropriate cord. That way they dont have to stock two lines.

these are the replies from shop the states and usglobalmail;

Obviously shop the states know what they are talking about. I will try them, now I only need to makeup my mind between the dell XPS gen2 and the Acer travelmate 8104....

Hi Michael

Thank you for your email. We have had a number of Australian members purchase items from Dell using our Buying Service. Dell does not accept non-US credit cards so you would need to submit a Buying Service request through our website to complete the purchase.

Before purchasing though we would suggest that you ensure from the retailer that the package shipped is under the following dimensions max length 42", max length plus girth 79" otherwise your order would need to ship via a more expensive carrier like FedEx, DHL, UPS etc and would not attract the rates listed at our FAQ section Question 5 for international shipping.

If your purchase is over the value of $100US we also suggest that you determine customs fees for your purchase by contacting Australian customs so that you are aware of the end charges.

We hope this answers some of your questions.

Kind Regards,

Shop the States
