Good idea and thanks for creating the thread 303-Acid

I have got the Jap Value Pack and Ridge Racers, I have mainly been using the PSP as an MP3 player (figures?).

Just waiting for some good games to come out...

Has anyone noticed the UMD Movies at amazon.ca ?? Looks like they are going to sell for CAD $16~$17, which is much more reasonable than Lik Sang @ USD$50. I can't view the US ones on my unit though.. but DVD can put to Memory Stick with serious compression, although MPEG4 looks like an efficient algorithm.

Umm, good question, so far this week I have used the PSP to listen to mp3s for about 2~2.5 hours (over 4 or 5 sessions) and the system says the battery is around 50%. I turn the screen off, put the unit on 'hold' and use the remote for all functions.

I have also had the unit connected to the PC to transer mp3s and video, plus deleting files etc etc.

When playing games, the battery life seems better, I have had a couple of good stretches of say 2~3 hours playing Ridge Racers and the battery rarely goes under half over this playing time period.

The rechargeable battery makes up for a **shortish** battery life. I also think if you use it constantly the battery life is much better than in small blocks, like I usually do.

I have Jap value kit + Ridge Racers as well (we should all have a wireless race :P)

got tons of time out of it (I play in stints, not 4 hour sessions) couple of 512mb cards...duo's are great cos you can chuck em in your wallet no sweat.

what are you using to convert your videos? apparently 480x276 does not play from the memory card (at the moment) thats only UMD resolution.

ive tried a few converters, my favorite is PSP Video 9...

next on my list -

GT4 Psp
Wipeout Pure
Luminare (or whatever its called)
Tales of Phantasia...saw this playing on a demo unit...looked great

For video conversion I am using the Sony program, is it converter 2?? that seems to be OK, I am not sure what res the video comes out at, I'll have to convert a DVD at some point soon to see how good that is.

Must all video's be converted to the sony spec?

Or can the PSP play DivX and Mpeg4 files straight?

Cool, another OCAU sub-club. Sign me up.

I got the PSP-1000 (Jap version; as I deduce the PSP-1001 is the US ver).
Came with ver 1.5 firmware - I don't know if the vendor I bought it from updated it if it came from the factory like that.

Ridge Racer - Region 1 (US).

I can only get my hands on a 256Mb mem stick, as my place of work only has those in stock. (Damn you other people buying stuff off us!)

I've been successful in converting short music vids from AVI to MP4 using 3GP, so now I'll look into heavily compressing big files to try and fit maybe an episode of The Simpson or something onto the 256Mb stick.

My next purchase probably sooner rather than later would be a screen protector - maybe not just for the screen but the entire front side, as I find the clear finish tends to attract fingerprints.

remember that the screen res is only 480x276, and you cant encode to that res anyway (PSP doesnt recognise it) usually 320x240 or 416x208. so off the bat you will save space just in resolution, another thing is stuff like anime compresses really well, you can get an hour out of 256mb without trying.
