Unhappy HTPC TV Out is NOT GOOD MATE

OK i have just built an HTPC using the Coolermaster ATC-620C case (mATX) with an Asus P4S533-VM, Celery 1.8, 512MB DDR400, Leadtek DV2000, SB Live 5.1, 80GB Seagate HDD and an 440mx 64MB DDR AGP with TV out plugged into a SONY 68cm WEGA FS Trinitron

I am having a problem with the TV out when playing recorded TV programs or DVD disks

the picture is jumpy and the picture quality TV thru the DV2000 tuner is very average

could this be fixed with a better AGP card ??, ATM i am using an S-Video to RCA cable connected to the TV with sound from the SB Live

any input/help most appreciated

I'm pretty sure any graphics card w/ tv is a novelty.

If you want tv go for a dedicated card.

signal strength is fine and has nothing to do with stutter while playing back recorded TV

"dedicated card" ??

stutter can be one of 3 things IMHO, crappy AGP card, not enough CPU power which i doubt and maybe a dedicated HDD for recorded programs???

this is my first play with an HTPC so i am in the process of learning all the ins and outs

i am using the remote that came with my DV2000 which works OK and am going to buy a cordless trackball for using the HTPC for other tasks such as backing up my movies etc

AlphaOne, I don't know much about your Leadtek card (DV2000) but if you want to learn more about HD TV then I recommend the following two sites:

http://www.dtvforum.info/

and

http://forums.dvbowners.com/

Both of these sites have a number of people with a lot of experience in HD TV.

I have a DNTV Live card running on an Athalon 2100 with onboard graphics. Works OK with none of the problems you have experienced.

Hope this is of some help

forgot to mention that the DV2000 is NOT high definition though normal TV is perfect when played onto my 19" monitor

hiya,

RCA is the 'worst' TV video connection you can have, as it bundles all of the signals that make up the TV signal into the one cable.

Does your TV have any other video inputs (S-VHS, SCART or component)?

Generally ATI video cards are regarded as having the 'best' RCA output as they have very good hardware filters and provide nice clean video output. nVidia can be a bit 'smeary' sometimes, though I haven't tried my 6600GT's video output as yet.

Also the Leadtek DV2000 appears to only be an analogue TV tuner, so the analogue picture may not be the 'best' to begin with (I've never been impressed with any of the analogue TV tuners I've had - Lifeview, Pinnacle, Pineapplehead etc. all were very wishy washy).

yes i thought it may be the RCA

my TV has component so it looks like i will have to get another AGP card

i was going to try using my ATI 9800 but the TV-Out is not component

hiya,

there are mods/adaptors you can make/buy to get component output from ATI cards (usually only NTSC though so far as I know), otherwise I'd recommend buying an nVidia 6 series video card as I know they definately have component video output (the newer ATI's may as well, but I haven't been following them sorry).

Cheers,
