Default Bluetooth ActiveSync Probs

Having trouble getting my XDA IIs to ActiveSync over a bluetooth serial connection.
I can stuff around for an hour and get it to work (a different way every time), then next time I go to use it, it won,t work again.
Bluetooth manager tells me that the incoming bluetooth port is com 3, however, ActiveSync sometimes says this port is unavailable, sometimes it is simply missing all together, and other time its there and available, but still wont connect.
Signal dosnt appear to be the problem as I can set up a PAN and this will run fine.
Ive just tried reinstalling ActiveSync with no luck.
Any ideas??
Is there any software available to view bluetooth signal strength? Just to be sure signal ISNT my problem.
