Default Laptop / Power or motherboard ?

Heres the story.

I Own a compaq presario 700,

Problem : i have NO power at all running through the laptop , with or without a battery , with or without the AC adapter , when i press the power button , NOTHING happens. no lights , no other indication, just plain old dead.

Is it the power supply , or could it be the motherboard?

EDIT : If this post is in the wrong section please move MODS.

It could be either. If your game, open up the laptop and check around the power socket that its still connected. My last presario's power socket had detatched itself from the motherboard and wouldn't allow power to work. 1x new battery, 1x new power adapter and a few bits and pieces from jaycar and i had it figured out

Hope that helps.

www.jaycar.com.au

If you leave the power supply plugged in does it get warmish? I'd say its most likely to be the laptop than the power supply.

Get someone to check the power supply for you,if it's fine then it has to be the laptop.
If the power supply is gone,it won't charge the battery or power up the lappy.

When you say " Get someone to check the power supply " you mean take it to a laptop repair shop, and do they have methods to check if the power supply is faulty.

You both said if its not the power supply its the laptop ?? What part of the laptop if its not the power supply?

Sorry for being noob, Thanks in advance.

Ok , When i say POWER SUPPLY i dont mean the power charger , i mean the power suply IN the laptop. The part that regulates the power to the other parts of the computer.

Anyone else help?

I just want to know if a motherboard is capable of not allowing any power to run thro the computer , is this possible?

So you mean the BATTERY,if your power supply isn't working it will neither charge the battery nor power up the lappy,i'm pretty sure(but not positive)that if the battery is dead, the lappy should still power up with the AC adapter. Most laptops run with no battery fitted.
If the power supply is OK,sounds like psylink is right on the money.
Not sure what sort of fuses or overload protection these things run, could be that too.

I'd be checking out that adapter. If it's staying stone cold then it's not doing anything, which means your mainboard isn't getting any power, let alone charging your battery. Even if the battery is dead/not present, your laptop should still turn on with just adapter power. Considering it's the thing that regulates fluctuating 240V to DC voltage down around 18 - 20V (most of the time), it could've taken a bit of a hit and died.

I'm forever replacing them at work, they have a tendancy to pack it in relatively frequently with daily use. I'd be looking at that.

If you, or someone you know has a multimeter (that is rated for the output power on the power supply) then check its supplying voltage.

If you don't have a multimeter, just place the connectors on your tongue .

OM MY GOODNESS PEOPLE.. no nono nono

listen,

Battery is a battery , clip that goes into the laptop so it can be portable
AC adapter, used to charge battery and also to connect power from a wall socket.
POWER SUPPLY The unit inside the laptop that the AC adaptor connects to which gives the laptop POWER.

Like for your home desktops, you can buy a 500 wat power supply.

Get me now?
