Default Li-ion Battery is crap!!!?

Hi all,

Not sure if this just means I need a new laptop battery,
but when I first got my SOny v505 laptop, the battery seemed to last for about 1.5 hours, maybe more if i put the screen brightness down...

But now... after about 1 year it goes from full to empty in about 15-20mins.

What is wrong with it?!

I can say that i leave the laptop ON 24/7 and it is connected to AC power about 98% of the time, when i want to go wireless I take it off to the TV room or something, but it only gives me about 15-20mins.

HAve I done something to ruin the conidtion of the battery by keeping it on mains for the whole time? I thought Li-ion batteries dont have problems with this?

Can I restore it back to original condition or will I have to buy a new battery?

thanks, any input would be great!
cheers

Lithium-ion batteries still die. They're normally rated to about 1000 cycles, although they also degrade with time (so it's going to die regardless of what you do to help it). They don't suffer from the issues that Ni-Cads suffered where improper charging could easily reduce the capacity of the cells, but they'll still die all by themselves.

Maybe try recycle the battery a few times by using all the battery and recharging... If it still doesn't work most likely the battery and feeling its age and needs to be replaced....

What is the best way to treat a Li-Ion Battery? My battery life on my Tablet used to be at around 3hrs 20mins....a week later its 2hrs at best albeit with the Wireless on.

Should I only charge it when it is empty? Is it detremental to have it plugged into AC while full?

Its best not to have them in the laptop if you use it for desktop work. The heat generated by the laptop degrades the battery's life significantly. Just shove the battery in when you plan to go mobile. Thats what I do, and my batteries are in very good condition after 2 years.

Ive read the best thing to do is recharge them when they get to 50% whenever possible, and not let them dip below this. Fully charge and then either use again or take out if plugged in to an AC outlet.

ROFL, thats basically whats happened with a Compaq Presario that belongs to a relative. Battery lasts for a solid 15mins even though it runs off AC all the time
