Default laptop applications?

hey all

i've been wandering around the intarweb for a while now and i can't seem to find many(any) useful laptop applications. i obviously don't know where to look. basically i was just wondering if any of the laptop users can recommend some useful software to install on my laptop such as battery maximising/cpu throttling software, and wireless software. is it worth using 3rd party software or is it just better to let windows do its thing with these aspects of my laptop? any recommendations would be appreciated!

cheers
geekyd

NetStumbleris a very useful wireless sniffing program. Im not sure of the uses it would have for u, but can be useful if u want to know where ur wireless network is strongest and so u can avoid the weakest points. Also great if u want to go war driving and find some badnwith to steal.

I also recommend Weplab for 'research', SpeedswitchXP for controlling cpu speed, and Powerstrip for setting video clockspeed and configuring video out and colour profiles.

If you're using a dell, also download I8kfanGUI for controlling fan speed.

Battery Monitor.NET v0.7

SpeedFan 4.21

SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors fan speeds, temperatures and voltages in computers with hardware monitoring chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature (almost all :-)) and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some motherboards. At the lowest level, SpeedFan is an hardware monitoring software, but its main feature is that it can control the speed of the fans (depending on your sensor chip) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise and power consumption.

you should also have recieved some good software when you bought it. I know acer has some good utilities, as I have an acer travelmate which comes with various tools to help save power. I dont know about other brands..

I understand your concern. I really struggle with acpi and suspend to ram functions under linux. However under xp acpi should be pretty good. I would check your bios to ensure such functions are enabled, you may also find other features such as fan speed control which could save a little power over winter.
