If you hold down the power button for 5 seconds, it'll turn off (or just turn off the PSU if it has the switch to do that).

Generally, you'd go into the BIOS, check that everything is right (HDD detected as Primary Master or on SATA, RAM at correct timings, CPU at correct speed) and then change the boot order to something where the CD drive is before the HDD (I normally use A:, CDROM, C. Then put the Windows XP CD in, save and exit the BIOS, and on the next boot it should run Windows setup. If you've got a SATA HDD and the controller is a non-native one, you'll need to give Windows the right drivers (probably included on a floppy disk in the box). If it's a PATA drive or if the SATA is native (should be for any 24-pin mainboard like yours) then you can just let Windows detect the drive, format it to NTFS, and install.

ok ive set max memclock to 400ddr (instead of auto),

have to set memory timming 1t or 2t, what should i be it is ocz 1gb value.

not sure what to do with CAS# latency, RAS# to CAS# delay, Min RAS# active time.

the ram sticks say 3-4-4-8.

every thing else looks fine.

it boots into xp setup automatically if you have only 1 hard drive not formatted.

could it be that the ram is not listed on the motherboards qualified vendors list ?

Did you buy the RAM new with the rest of the parts? Are you absolutely certain that they didn't actually give you a pair of 1GB sticks by mistake? I've never heard of a mainboard detecting too much RAM before, and it won't have anything to do with the speed settings or timings.

If it doesn't have heatspreaders, what is written on each of the chips? How many of those chips are there on one stick?

Good point. I'm used to doing it when the HDD is formatted.

well the sticks say 512 on the ocz stickers, and there is 16 chips on each ram module (8 on each side).

each chip reads as follows OCZ 0520 X4P 560840H.50 (hard to read lol)

Try placing the ram in different slots.

For the moment I would just set everything to SPD or Auto, just until you get into windows and can do some proper burning in.

my mobo manual says (2-11) "due to cpu limitation, DIMM modules with 128mb memory chips or double sided x16 memory chips are not supported in this motherboard. (ASUS A8N-SLI)
