What excatly happens?

"Can't read file type" or whatever?

Try grabbing a different version of the codec or d/l WMP 7.1...

U need the "divX alpha 3.11 codec" <- search for that one.

Most divX's available were encoded with that codec

Nup, reformatted recently, the new ones available at www.divx.com are 4.0xx , version "4" to all the players, wheras the old 3.11a's are version "3" .

Proof: Install the latest v4 drivers and try to run the file, the error given by realplayer is something like "Mpeg4 layer 3 codec not found" (try realplayer when wmplayer wont work) - that clued me in on the problem, it was searching for version 3 of the codec. The movie was encoded in the old codec. Obviosly the new codec isnt backwards compatible (pretty darn stupid because the ppl who made it dont mirror the old versions)

Yep so thats all you need. The audio works because it uses the same audio codec (mp3).

Try and see if you can open it up in Virtualdub (free download - just google for it). That may give you some clues...

Also, after installing Divx3.11 alpha codec, you have to make sure you run the 'Run Me First' thingy in the start menu to make sure it is installed fully.

I'm not sure how you encoded with Divx if you didnt have it installed . Good luck anyhows.
