Default X800 > X800XL softmod?

Hi all,
I'm going to purchase a PCI-E Gigabyte X800 some time next week. This card is almost definitely the best bang for buck card available to me at the moment (I have a budget). Recently i read a review of said card at hardcoreware.net:

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-286-1.htm

This review suggested that it would be possible to softmod the Gigabyte X800 to an X800XL. Obviously this raised my attention, however I haven't been able to find anything about this softmod on the interweb. Since I am going to buy the card anyway, it's not a factor in my purchase, but it would be nice to know if I could get even a little bit more bang for my buck.

So, I turn to you guys and ask: Does anyone know if this softmod is possible, and more specifically has anyone tried it? If so, what were your results?

Thanks in advance

AFAIK the extra pipes in PCIx chips are disabled in hardware. They did not pass QA with all pipes enabled at the required clock speeds and were used in cheaper card configurations (x800 and x800pro). Some x800 pro chips can be softmodded, but I do not believe this chip used in the x800 is the same chip - correct me if I'm wrong, because this is just something I read in a few forums (which you can take with a grain of salt). I believe that the extra pipes are disabled on die, meaning they cannot be unlocked.

moreover as KYPREO has said... they are HW disabled and market dynamics are such that every card capable of operating with full 16 pipes are going to be sold as XT's x850's etc (ATI simply cant make enough of these cards). Thus if you do unlock them they are certain to be defective pipes and produce artifacts.

The X800 cannot be softmodded or hardmodded except for a few "BUILT BY ATI" cards that have been going around. Other than that you will need to fork out the extra for a X800XL

Xpertvision is better, Powercolor is the best though external power helps the card out.

gigabyte is more expensive and has a passive cooler. the passive cooler is a bit of a worry with users/reviews reporting 80'C under load. This means it might not have much of an overclock in it unless you do something about the cooling - the reviews have shown there is minimal overclock in it. The gigabyte has the fastest memory clock @980Mhz however.

xpertvision is cheap and quick @900mhz memory but doesn't come bundled with software afaik. It uses active cooling and should has a higher performance ceiling than the gigabyte. by the way it uses the exact same memory as the gigabyte.

the powercolor card has DDR1 memory which is pretty shit compared to the GDDR3 you get with the other two cards. Not worth it, because the xpertvision outclocks it on the memory by 200mhz straight out of the box without overclocking.

xpertvision without a doubt!

Perhaps that one would softmod?

Matt.

Only some will unlock those ones on the ebay link appear to be rebranded Powercolor ones as they have the same coolers, theres a 99% chance it wont unlock either because it wont let you or the extra pipelines are faulty. It easier to just get a X800XL

xpertvision without a doubt!

Take the Powercolor over the rest, get the X800 BRAVO edition which is $20 more and it will kick the ass off any other X800. It has GC16 - 1.6ns modules good for 600Mhz or 1.2ghz stock! Infact most X800 BRAVO cards have enough speed in em to catch the XL cards.

yeah I think the bravo edition is good with the 1.6ns memory, but it is still $430+, which is over $100 more expensive than the xpertvision. It definitely competes well against the gigabyte though!

I was comparing the non pro powercolor which is in the same price range as the xpertvision.

Can anyone confirm the specs on xpervisions site? they say its a 0.13nm process chip used on their X800 PCI-E's if it was there there is a very good chance it could unlock if it is 0.11nm then it wont happen though
