Default Using desktop hd as laptop hd?

IS it possible to use a desktop hd as a laptop harddrive? I am planning on getting a ext hd and just wondering if i can use a desktop hd. Is there a benefit of using ext hd by using desktop hd if it is possible?

You could use a external USB Hdd bay. Some Bios let you boot from usb, but some do not. I dont know meny of the new laptops will let you boot from USB.

As for advantages... Its alot cheaper, but also more bulk to be carring around with you. It will eat up your Battary life alot faster, if it will run without extenral power at all.

Is there any reason other then cost that you want to use a extenral HDD?
If so, you have to ask the question, is the extra bulk and the lower battary life worth it.

d&k have a non external powered one (draws power form 2 usb).

saying I have a spire on a old celly laptop. Don't expect the drive to perform as fast as a desktop hd. The bottleneck for me is the USB connector (even though its USB 2 which is as fast as ata the USB controllers on the intel 845 boards are the slow point).

Your laptop may have a better controller so I'm not sure for your case. Overall its good enough for my leeching movies/watch 3 months later behaviour.

Although.... a firewire port may differ in performance. Does anyone agree since from what i hear firewire doesn't have any overheads?
