Well i read the first line of both computers, and i don't know much about laptops but i read p-m vs c-m and i dont know how good a celron-m is but i would avoid a celeron at all costs, which i have been told my people, celeron is not the way to go but i really dont know how good a c-m is. The price isnt much different as well only $150? for a p-m, i would go for the dell as i just got a dell couple days ago as well.

Bolded for a reason.

Personally the dell is looking cheapest.

When I'm looking for a notebook, I won't go below 1900, you instantly know your comprimising on something.

That could just be my tired ol' brain chucking out some random words, take it for what its worth. I'm going to sleep.

I mean obviously 715 vs 370 says something.

what that is.

I don't know.

Dude, get the Dell. Their aftersales service is miles above Toshiba, and the machine has a better battery and specs.

Do upgrade to the 9-cell by the way, you'll notice the extra hour of battery life more than the extra 20 quid in your wallet.

Sorry to Hijack but what about a Tablet, the LU20 from LG is good at $2000. It may make it easier for him to take notes and edit stuff.

That thing isn't actually a tablet (Notice the lack of winXP tablet edition, amongst other clues) It's offical a "sub note" or whatever that is.

I got my Dell i8600 in year 11 (Feb 2004), and it's basically a Dell i6000 with a different case and video card. The laptop will be fine as long as you carry it around in a decent backpack you'll be fine.

The Dell for sure.

Processor is much better as well as the widescreen, thats just to start of with.

You dont get win-xp pro but im sure he can handle the home edition with the Dell.

If he isnt going to play gfx intensive games the onboard video will be fine to play movies, surf net etc.

Not sure what the 'antenna' is on the tecra but could possibly be a tv tuner/adapter built in? Gotta weigh up if you actually want/need this is a buying point.

Hope that helps.

If its the Tosh, my GF has the same laptop, its ok but it can get a tad sluggish when you are doing something a bit intensive.

In this case, get the Dell, i will never buy another C-M based laptop, no matter how cheap can get it for

I would go the Dell, but unless they are offering a deal on ram (recently had 4x extra ram, so you'd get 1gb), I wouldn't pay $50 for them to use up you 2nd slot with only 256mb of RAM. Your machine is then stuck at 512mb with no spare slots.

IIRC they only have 2 slots. 256 in one, maybe aftermarket 512mb or even 1gb in the 2nd slot, the machine will run better. There may be issues with warranty.

for those of you saying toshiba is way behind dell in service i personally think otherwise, all toshiba units carry a 1 year international warranty with pickup and delivery anywhere in aus. Not that you'll be needing it

I wish there was something similar to the PCDB were there was a space for the specs and then some image spots for the results of the standard tests run:

Super Pi 1mb Calc, 3dMark 2001 etc

then you could add all the scores together to give the laptop a total score, then peeps could see what they are getting what they pay for. it may be that for 50 bucks more you could quadriple your performance..who knows..

Anyway here are mine:

(Entry Level) Toshiba Tecra A3 C-M 370 1.5GHz Notebook:

Intel Celeron M Processor 370 (1.5GHz) 256MB RAM, 15" 1024x768 16M Colour Active Matrix TFT Display, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 16-128MB Shared Video Memory, 40GB Hard Disk Drive, DVD/CDRW, Serial, Modem, Lan, WiFi Antenna Only,Touchpad, Microsoft Windows XP Professional
