Cleaning equipment

After regular and normal use, my PDA has managed to get quite grubby (or rather, the aluminium case has). What is the best thing to use to clean it? I was thinking something like a bit of rubbing alcohol and soft cloth, or would the alcohol ruin the finish? Would plain ol' water be good enough?

On a similiar note, what about cleaning a mobile phone? Many of these have pretty shiny finishes, so I wouldn't know what to use.
