Hi all,
In my search for a decent 17" LCD laptop, im starting to consider buying one of the LG LW70's. Does anyone have any opinions on the LW70 or any other LG laptops for that matter? Good reviews and buyer opinions have been very hard to find. Thanks.

Been looking at LG notebooks myself, but havent been able to find the ones I actually want from their brochure.
When I checked on their website, the ones I want come up with Wholesale Only ![]() Anyway, I went with an Asus W3. Havent got it yet though

Havent purchased one but was seriously tossing up between the LG notebooks and the NEC versa 540
Some things that I noticed about the LG notebooks are: They have the keypad seperate like on a normal keyboard. Great for people who do a lot of number typing like accountants. This means that its a longer laptop but that isnt a bad thing if you want the big screen. The have a very nice screen. Just seems like the screen is very bright and clear. they do have a bussword for it but cant remember. Clearbright or something There were two models. a 15" and a widescreen 17" I found the 17" was too heavy for my liking. It also had less video ram (64mb). I think the 15" version has 128. The weight of the 15" was good i found. In All if you are going to settle for one of them i would only pick the 17" if you really want to watch lots of movies. Otherwise you are definatly better off with the 15". That being said you should really look at the NEC versa 540 aswell. it has a 128mb 9700 with 2.0 Centrino rather than both the LG's 1.8 Centrino. I do believe they are around the same price. The Asus v6020V looks pretty nice too but I settled on the NEC cause it has the best specs and is pretty good price compared to the others. Looking on Toms hardware the differences between systems with DDR2 and the older chipsets in notebooks arnt really that big. I can play Source, BF2, C&C Generals all with no problems at good detail levels with no slowness. Toms hardware says that the dual channel hardly makes a difference at all. So I wouldnt really even bother taking that into consideration when buying. I dont know what your using it for but I assume you will want to play some games cosidering its specs. Maybe someone else here can fill us in on how much of a difference the extra 64 meg of video ram will make to games but i would say with games like BF2 it would be a definate difference. Don't know much about warrenty. Extended warrenty I believe is not through LG but warranty companies here in Australia. So I think they only offer one year. If you buy from Hardly normans or someware similar they offer extended periods with local Authorised repair centers for LG. (Great for you cause then you dont have to deal with hardly n00bs) |

Hence why i would like a big LCD. Would be nice if it could play games, but its not what ill be buying it for. Ive now pretty much decided on the LG LW70 which has the 1.7Ghz PentiumM and the X600 with 64Mb.

LG laptops are damn good-looking. As for using a laptop for windows programming, higher resolutions are what you should look for. I use VS.net all the time, so my main laptop requirement was a 1400x1050 res screen, at least. Some of the 4:3 LG models have this, but their widescreen ones only have 1280x800 for the 15.4" and 1440x900 for the 17", which is not really good enough (as an experiment, set your monitor res at home to 1280x768, resize it so it looks widescreen and load up visual studio... you don't have a lot of room to work in).
For development/games I'd recommend the Toshiba A4 - 1.8/512/15.4" non-glossy screen 1680x1050/80gb/128mb GeForce6600go for $2750. I had ordered one, then decided I wanted more of everything and got a Dell 9300 with a 17" 1920x1200 glossy screen and a geforce 6800go. But it's a full kilogram heavier and almost twice as thick (as the Toshiba, and most of LGs models) so it's not for everyone. |
