Hi Lep, if battery life isn't a problem go for the Compaq M2045 available from DSE/Office Works/Myer, etc. for around $1150.00 minus $100.00 cash back.
www.compaq.com.au/promotions Celeron M 1.3Ghz 15" LCD 40Gb HDD DVD/CDR/W 256MB DDR Inbuilt Wireless 802.11G Mini PCI Network/Modem/TV S-Video Out/3 X USB 2.0 Ports/External Monitor Out Mine came with a 1.4Ghz CPU even though it said 1.3Ghz on the box but your milage may vary as the specs state 1.3. Battery life is around 2.5 hours for web browsing, Internet, database usuage. I don't think the Celeron is a huge power drain but the battery is most probably a cheaper, lower capacity pack. Cheers Pedro :-) |

Do you have a minimum requirement in so far as specs go? I just picked up a Thinkpad T22 off ebay from IBM Australia for $520, inc shipping.
Since it's running Gentoo and all i'm doing is surfing the net and writing my book, it's plenty powerful. Specs: 900MHz P-III, 256Mb RAM, 20Gb HDD, 6xDVD, 14" TFT screen, 10/100 LAN, USB 1.1 The T23 has a 1.1GHz PIII, and there are T30s up there that you may be able to squeeze in under your budget.

This MSI 510c looks like a runout model... ie. older 855 units that they fit cheap components in to sell.
But it has the hallmarks of an expensive unit, ie. good warranty, good SXGA screen, metal frame and good video card. I think I might go about getting one and upgrading CPU, mem and hdd. T.

If you could put together $1300, you could even pick up a new ASUS... For the extra $300, I dare say its worth it... Of course, you don't have to go for an ASUS for around the same money...

I can only see the Asus A4L and the Asus M6012R.
Both are inferior in many ways. A4L is a an SIS north/south w/ a weaker screen and int. SiS graphics. The Asus M6012R is an ATI north/IXP south w/ a weaker screen and ATI IGP graphics. Both have substantially inferior battery life to the MSI. T.

Never said it was super fantastic... But just from a speed point of view, I thought it was worth a mention when compared to a Compaq...
