Hi
I have an old laptop with a Celeron 300Mhz CPU and i want to swap it for the fastest one i can find. The motherboard has the Intel 440MX chipset. From http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets...ded/273492.htm The 440MX chipset supports Intel® Celeron® processor - Low Power and Ultra Low Power and Pentium® III processor - Low Power designs. http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/...nav3+proc_cel& Intel® Celeron® Processor - Low Power and Ultra Low Power 400A 128K 100 10.1W 1.35V 0-100° C 495 BGA 300 128K 100 5.7W 1.1V 0-100° C 495 BGA http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/...anav3+proc_p3& Pentium® III processors - Low Power 700 256K 100 16.12W 1.35V 0-100C 495 BGA 500 256K 100 12.2W 1.35V 0-100C 495 BGA 400 256K 100 10.1W 1.35V 0-100C 495 BGA what do i have to do to swap 300 128K 100 5.7W 1.1V 0-100° C 495 BGA <--------- This must be the current one with 700 256K 100 16.12W 1.35V 0-100C 495 BGA I realise it will produce 3x the heat. and the chips have the same package. But will it work if I just put it in? Will i require a custom BIOS? Thanks, Con |

Maybe i should have put this in the intel forum. mods move at your discression
found more info http://www.intel.com/design/support/...tiumiii_lp.htm Is the Intel® Celeron® Processor - Low Power pin for pin compatible with the Intel® Pentium® III Processor - Low Power? Yes, these processors are pin for pin compatible. It is thus possible to design a board that will support either processor, providing for a flexible solution. When designing a board that will support both Celeron - Low Power and Pentium III - Low Power processors, ensure that the voltage regulator requirements as well as thermal requirements of each processor to be used are met. |

Won't work.... Your jumping from one era of Intel to another, the laptop will only support the model's maximum advertised set up.. The newer P3-M are much more different then your celeron the voltages and heat out put would damage possible kill the laptop all together best thing is to get a new one

Hi im not trying to use the Pentium M processor i want to use the low power pentium 3 processor which uses the same chipset and pin out
the biggest thing is the voltage is different 1.1V compared to 1.35V i gusess i will have to try it to find out if 1.1V is enough to run the other processor. are there any bios hacks to change the cpu voltage? |

ok i completely stuffed up the package is BGA not BGA2. And the CPU voltage is 1.6V
The sSpec of the chip i have now is SL3AH the biggest i can upgrade to is 400MHz Either Celeron SL3GQ or Pentium II SL3EM Also the chipset is 440MX not 440MX-100 so i cant use a Pentium III only Celerons and Pentium II's Anyone got a spare SL3GQ???? |

see that was going to be my next question..
even if you could run a faster chip...where the hell are you going to find one!? certainly nowhere new these days.... maybe hunt around on some of the for sale threads, but you're going to have to get pretty lucky. ebay'd it yet?
