Hey guys. Here are some photos of my new rig.
The goals were 1) Absolute silence. 2) A reasonable amount of power for gaming. 3) Small form factor. 4) Unobtrusive. The PC is totally inaudible from more than 1m away. The only noise sources are. 2 x SilenX 80mm Fan 14dBA (isolated in silicone) WD 120G drive silenced by SilenX Luxurae Hard Drive Silencer which is totally inaudible @ 1m even when thrashing. Thermaltake Big Typhoon CL-P0114 (16dB) NV6rev2 Silencer. All fans (including silencer and CPU cooler) are throttled to permanent sub 1000rpm via internal fan speed controller. Nothing is overclocked. Of course the phantom power supply is fanless and noiseless. The case is available from AusPCMarket, I can't find a brand name. Overall I am very happy with the package. It is totally silent, has some grunt for bf2 and plenty of disk space. The next addition will be a Gigabyte RAMDisk for better application performance. I'll post some update pics when it is installed, I may buy 2 and raid. (yes they will fit) Click to view full-sized image! Hosted by UGBox Image Store Click to view full-sized image! The white specs on the side of the case there is just some dust. Out of interest I was originally using the CoolerMaster E3WKPTXS-01 Heatsink but this did not offer sufficient cooling (CPU shut down @ 80 degrees) I believe this is because my fanless PSU results in the case airflow being too low. With the replacement cooler all is perfrect now. Last edited by someotherguy; 18th July 2005 at 6:41 PM. |

It's a great little case. Of course I didn't use the PSU or fans it is packaged with but at ~$90 who's complaining.

Yeah I was mainly going for functionality rather than presentation. The case won't be opened again until I get thje RAMDisk.
Another thing I can't recomend highly enough is the SilenX Luxurae Hard Drive Silencer. Just the fact that the hard drive is free-floating from the case seems to cut out 80% of the noise and the metal case and noise absorbing foam does the rest. I thought I would need a RAMDisk for total silence but not so. Another point, even with the NV6rev2 Silencer fan at under 1/2 speed the GPU never exceeds 605 degrees which is remarkable consigering my stock was hitting the mid 70s. I also like the stealth appearance of the case, the only indication you have that the computer is on are the power and hard drive lights and the soft blue glod from the phantom power supple. That is unless you try running a DVD in the Sony burner. Compared to the computer a CD spinning up seems earth shatteringly loud. Edit: Another thing I really like is the disproportionate size of the CPU and GPU coolers, the seem to take up most of the case. btw in case you hadn't noticed the black thing under the DVD is the HDD enclosure.
