Default Results from my overclocking (more to come!!)

Well, currently just running the following:
  • ABIT KT7A.
  • Duron 850 @ 1050, 1.75 volts up from default 1.6.
  • Thermoengine with a 4500rpm fan, running at 4900.
  • Arctic Silver 2 thermal paste.
  • GeForce 2 MX.
  • 256mb ram.
  • Windows 2000, Service Pack 2.
  • VIA 4 in 1 4.32 final.
  • Detonator 12.41.

Chipset is at 25 degrees celsius after gaming, 22 idle, CPU is at 37 degrees, after some gaming, sitting at 33 idle.

At 850 I was getting 1700 3dmarks in 3dmark2001, getting 3500 in 3dmark2000.

At 1050, havent run 3dmark2001 yet, but getting 3975 in 3dmark2000.

Windows 2000 wouldnt boot at 1100 (tried an 11 multipler by 100fsb, no go, but booting fine at 1050 (and really, cant complain about 200 free mhz in speed).

Off to run 3dmark2001 now, and see what I get. 1800+ would be nice.

3dmark results (both 2000 and 2001), at 850 and 1050:

While at 850:
- 3dmark2000 : 3500 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 1700 3dmarks

While at 1050:
- 3dmark2000 : 3975 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2016 3dmarks.

I'm going to try getting it to boot at 1100+ if i can by doing FSB and multiplier changes, I'll see what happens though.

Cyph,

ditch the detonator 12.41's and try some others. You'll get a nice boost in your 3dMark2000 for free. Eg, similar spec to yours with WHQL 7.76 drivers gave a score of 5302.

1050 seems to be the wall on Durons. My 800 got to 1050 on 1.8V

I did the voltage mod on my kt7a and set the voltage to 2.25Volts and I have my duron running at 1120mhz.

Try overclocking your vid card, as this will give you a great performance in 3dmark...

Okay well, I just changed the FSB to 133, 8 x 133 = 1064mhz, so I thought I'd rerun 3dmark2000 and 2001 to see how much a 133 fsb helps out.

At 100fsb:
- 3dmark2000 : 3975 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2016 3dmarks

At 133fsb:
- 3dmark2000 : 4525 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2128 3dmarks

looks like the 133fsb was very beneficial under 3dmark2000, gained me 550 extra marks. Performance increase wasnt as large under 3dmark2001, but still a nice improvement none the less.

Im about to go put 4x agp and fast writes on, along with 4 way memory interleave in bios, and see what happens. Hopefully it works out good

Okay well, just put the agp aperture size to 128, along with 4x agp and fast writes support, and 4 way memory interleave.

Before 4x, fast writes, aperture of 128 and 4 way memory interleave:
- 3dmark2000 : 4525 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2128 3dmarks

Current scores:
- 3dmark2000 : 4578 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2163 3dmarks.

So as can be determined by that, there isnt much to be gained from 4x agp and fast writes really, and I dont know if 4 way memory interleave actually did anything beneficial.

BTW, after running 3dmark2000 and 3dmark2001, temp is currently at 35 for the chipset, and 36 for the cpu. Had the wrong sensors setup in motherboard monitor before. CPU rises to about 42 with a load, but it drops off rather quickly.

Now to do some video card overclocking, and see what happens I guess.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my system so far

well, if i want to take the thermoengine off, i have to take the psu out so i can get easy access to the retention clip holding it onto the cpu, hehe. STUPID MIDI TOWERS!!!

i only have some troubles taking it off with the other side of it, but it just takes a little bit of moving it around and it comes off after about 15 seconds of moving it around. pity about those hugh capacitors being where they are right next to the socket though, but otherwise, it isnt too hard to get off. just annoying at times

Default Vid Card clocking results

Okay well, I've done some video card clocking, with more to be done later on to see what I can get.

I only overclocked two times, to 180/180, and 190/190, but here are the results.

Default clock:
- 3dmark2000 : 4578 3dmarks.
- 3dmark2001 : 2163 3dmarks.

180/180 Core/Ram speed:
- 3dmark2000 : 4746 3dmarks. (nearly a rise of 200 3dmarks!!)
- 3dmark2001 : 2212 3dmarks. (and a whopping 50 extra 3dmarks here)

190/190 Core/Ram speed:
- 3dmark2000 : 4914 3dmarks. (over the unclocked one by 336 3dmarks)
- 3dmark2001 : 2310 3dmarks. (over the unclocked one by 147 3dmarks)

I'm going to do some fiddling with my core/ram speeds again tonight, I'll aim at 200/200, and see what I can do.

If anyone is interested in what video card it is, its a Leadtek Winfast GeForce2 MX, not the new family of MX cards, but the older ones that were released last year. Its a pretty good solid card actually.

Though I wouldnt mind a Geforce 2 gts and see what I could do with it, haha!

Same setup as yours, except my processor is @ 872 mhz, RAm @ 154 mhz, i get 2300 or so...

i have tweaked a fair bit and mucked around with my card, but 3d mark seems more 3d card dependant than CPU, coz ppl with 1400 mhz athlons get the same as me with an MX (or a 100 over or so... so is it really the 3d card ??)

Okay well, I just did some more clocking with my vid card (200/200 for core/ram), and ran 3dmark2000 and 3dmark2001 again.

200/200 Core/Ram speed:
- 3dmark2000 : 5092 3dmarks
- 3dmark2001 : 2392 3dmarks.

Unclocked Core/Ram speed:
- 3dmark2000 : 4578 3dmarks.
- 3dmark2001 : 2163 3dmarks.

at 200/200 I've gotten a rise of over 500 3dmarks in 2000 over the default clock speeds.

And gained over 200 3dmarks in 3dmark2001.

I might try to for 210/210, and see what I get. Dont know yet though, cooling may be an issue with my video card.
